Last week I fitted the after market air filter system that was mentioned in the recent post from 'Sidetrack' magazine.
The system comprises two spring tensioned, oiled, foam filter elements to replace the stock standard paper filter as well as a pre-filter 'sock' which goes on the end of the snorkel.
On removing the stocker I noticed it was quite dirty even though I had done a small number of Kms on dirt and conditions had not been very dusty.
Test rode the bike on the road after fitting and the bike seemed to have more get up and go even with the snorkel filter on.

Went for a proper GS ride the other day and got the bike very dirty. Went through a deep muddy pool and travelled some very rough dusty roads - sometimes in convoy. Muck in every nook and cranny of the bike when I got home.
Today I checked the prefilter.....full of dust, sand and grit. It had clearly done its job very well.
I removed the panels to check the main filter - the snorkel was covered in dirt along its whole length and there was sand and grit everywhere around the housing for the main filter.
But when I checked it - pristine condition. Not a speck of dust or discoloration to be seen
From now on when I ride dirt or mixed roads I will definitely have the prefilter on. In fact I think I will just keep it on all the time as it does not seem to inhibit the bike's breathing
If someone can direct me to the 'how to post pictures' part of the site I will include some pics.
BTW the 12 was very impressive in the dirt. i am new to riding dirt and the bike's ability is a lot greater than mine. I just learned to trust it more and more as the day went on. this is an amazing bike - very confidence inspiring on the dirt as well as on the tar

picture pre wash

figured out how to post a picture (go low res you fool).
Here is the bike after the ride

so I checked the snorkel and pre filter

and this is what I found.
You can see that the pre-filter had taken up a lot of the crap.
The oily mark on the end of the snorkel is because the sock is oiled so as to work better

cleaner now

Here is a clean one reinstalled. It is attached with a cable tie around the mouth of the snorkel with the sock pointing down the snorkel tube.
Highly recommended if you are going somewhere dusty or muddy.
Your bike can breath easy and safely
