after returning from a week away in france.....

hi, while on my travels round france, i happened to melt the left hand pannier with the exhaust gases bending round the rear courner of the pannier. i've heard you can buy the backs, so it will be repairable, but i'm thinking of selling them and getting ali panniers. now this is where the fun starts. there are so many different manufacture/types/styles/sizes and features.
so far i've got it down to 3 different manufacturers, just cos i like the look of them ;)

i'm after a set that will not be wider once fitted than a set of system panniers, other than that i don't know what other features to look out for, other than security.

can anyone put some light on what i should be looking for? and one has to be able to used as a seat when camping.
 
Ive got metal mule whcih I am very happy with. :) :) :)
What makes them the first choice in my opinion is the communication / service from them is excellent. I have had excellent service from them and was very glad to have cancelled my Gsa box order with BMW.

got BMW standard issue panniers on my 1200GSA and they are perfect...water tight, robust and very secure..bit costly but I think well worth it....would not want anything different
 
right still between the above in my first post, the thing that can make me go one way or another is the look of the frame mounts, while there on the bike, no panniers on (anyone got some pic's) and how long/easy they are to take on and off. if people with said luggage can shear some info, that would be great :)

Got myself a set of standard caja sahels about a month ago. Definately well made beasts. Have had them on a few times for the commute into London with no problems. Seem to be slightly narrower than the system boxes. Definately narrower than the bar ends.

They can be removed in about five minutes using a socket set. But they are designed to stay on the bike once fitted. So no whipping them off to be used as seats. I have my ones removed for now and the rails don't look to bad.

Off to Scotland in a week so they will be tested out then, but not expecting any problems.

Received them within 3 days of the money clearing.

How did this happen i use system panniers and have not experienced any hot spots like this.

i had a remus can on, with the heat deflector attached. it happened while i was going a bit quick down the motorway in france, at about 6,500 rpm

Jesse's are a 'Standard' fit, Verns are hand crafted to order, so it's a case of "suits you sir ...."

I tried to buy a pair of Verns for my 12GSA and was told by the guy on the phone that he don't make panniers for the 1200 range yet, seemed odd to me as the bikes have been out since 04, they were my first choice due to the special build option (i need mine for work and needed a certain spec/size/compartment layout) and lots of reccomndations from other people on this site :nenau

I went for MM's and while they do a job, i'm not convinced on their customer service and the quality of the frame fit is suspect at the moment, but the panniers do the job and seem waterproof at the moment :thumb

You've obviously never ridden any long distance at high speed :eek: :eek:
 
I averaged almost xxxmph from south to north of france with std panniers and pipe last May, not a bother. Can only be from the bloody Remus pipe.
Looks repairable, one of the plastic welder guys could do it. Or rivet some mesh into it and use body filler.

it was because we where trying to make some time up/finish the boring bit of motorway. with the amount of hot gases leaving the exhaust, and the air space/turbalance behind the pannier, pulled/bent the exhaust gas round the courner of the pannier. creating a hot spot, which was slowly being pulled away from the pannier, till it got to thin and let go. and then because i couldn't repair it at the time it got worse. when i did get chance to fix it, i glued a coke can over it to make a heat shield, for the journey home.
 
and also, i'm making a decent heat shield at work to fix it. so if anyone wants a set of standard plastic panniers, with heat shield. i'll have a set for sale soon, or you could get a replacement back. so pm me.
 
How did the heat shield mod go, have you a succesful solution, have been checking mine since but no excessive hot spots yet, was it a hot day aswell?
when this occured. Will mod mine soon, dont want them dripping all over the road!
