Aftermarket (Stebel Magnum?) Horns and other electrical stuff - OEM Connectors wanted

Hi All,

Having recently purchased a Stebel Magnum and found out, along with everybody else, that you either need to cut off the BMW plug and fit spade connectors or butcher the original horn in order to reclaim a useable plug, I thought that there surely must be a better solution.

I'm not about to cut off the BMW plug for two reasons; firstly I just paid rather a lot of money for the bike and am not about to start butchering it, and secondly, I've worked as an electrical engineer in the past and the OEM connectors strike me as an infinitely better solution that even the best spade / bullet crimps found on other bikes. They're waterproof and you can't accidentally reverse the polarity, which is impotant to me on a bike.

It strikes me that the ideal solution therefore is to source some of these connectors and, if a minimum order quantity is required, pool together as a group. Having seen the demand for such a part I certainly don't mind providing the initial outlay, and sales & distribution would could be done via eBay.

The only problem is that I can't find them anywhere. RS Components don't seem to have them (following a very lengthy search), so I was wondering if somebody here knows more about them, like a part number, manufacturer etc.

I agree with your idea, and would be up for buying some of these connectors. But I suspect they are a German OEM product, maybe not imported into the UK, but available from the German equivalent of RS or Farnell.

To prevent the possibility of reverse polarity connection, I use bullet connectors, with the earth side as the plug and the live side on the socket - that way you can't get them the wrong way round and there's no danger if it's all disconnected and left dangling for a while. You could even crimp a set of bullets on the OEM horn and put it all back to original, so you can transfer the horn onto another bike later as well.

Aah, the old 'never have volts on pins' practice - I know whereof you speak. Would be far neater to get hold of some of them little plugs though.

I think it might be the part your after

Remember that it's not on the parts fiche - it's a service item in the service book. See the thread from North - it's all listed there.......

I got mine from Vines. Job's a good 'un - nothing needed to be cut and it's a 1 minute job to return everything back to OEM

Mine's on the way too. Came with the obligatory warning from the service chap about being careful what you connect to your bike cos it might blow it up and invalidate the warranty. How very refreshing to be treated like a complete do-nut once in a while.

I'm trying to find this type of connector from the BMW loom, 1150 GSA, for the Aux power socket, so put me down for a few as well please-

here's a pic of what I mean ( I also have posted on 1150 page);

is this the connector we're talking about ?

I've yet to try BMW dealer, - is there a part no. for this ?

I'm almost certain that's another part, Roger. The one I'm after has only one locking tab, which is located on one of the longer sides, looking at it end-on.

I'll post a picture when I get mine in the post, which should be later today with a bit of luck.

However,still don't know name or number of the connector, or if they can be purchased anywhere.

Most/many connectors on BMWs are bespoke connectors made by third party companies (manuly Tyco though) for the exclusive use and purchase by BMW. You just can't buy them in wholesale Parts shops/RS/Farnell/Maplins. However, if you get a friendly parts/service person at a BMW dealer and go when it's quiet it's usually worth the trawl through zillions of fiches. But TBH, it's better doing a good search on here, AdvRider, r1200gs.info and similar places (I know you've an 1150, but you get the drift) as well as google.

I love the sentiment, but wouldn't it just be just as easy for someone to go to their BMW dealer or call them directly and have them post it?

And they'll still have the choice of doing just that, assuming they find out what the part number is and that they have a dealer who's willing to order / sell the part.

If my search for Stebel Magnum fitting instructions had immediately uncovered a link to the correct part for sale via a Buy it Now on eBay, with pictures, then I'd probably have paid a tenner for it.

Like the saying goes, you pays your money, you takes your choice.

If you search hard enough, you can find the plug and sockets that match the OE items.

The erstwhile member of this forum, City Slicker, use to offer a horn conversion kit that simply bolted in place of the stock horns and used the same plug.

But don't ask me where he got them from.

The part number is 80 00 0 610 619 - 2 pole connector. It's a service part, not a parts part, so you'll have to ask the service man, not the parts man.

Erm ... could you please double-check that number for me? Mine just arrived from Vines along with the paperwork invoice where it states part number C61.13.8.365.340. Trouble is, this is the connector that's on the wiring loom, not the horn, so it's of little use to me.

If you still have any kind of invoice for yours could you please confirm the number? Maybe Vines posted me the wrong part and I've ended up with the socket when I wanted the plug.

Interesting thing is that there are no crimpable inserts either, it's just the plastic housing and two holes for - presumably - the wires or some kind of lead headers.
