Hi All

I am a five-and-a-half foot ex-Marine, I know, born-again-biker etc, but I am seriously considering a S/H R1200 GS. Many moons ago, I used to run BM bikes and had a R100RS for years.

Questions - may seem a little bone-headed, but I have not been to a dealers to see one yet:

1) Is the seat height range (810mm at the lower level) achievable on all stock bikes, or do you need a special seat/kit from dealers to get it down for us real shorties?

2) Do BMs still have that handy handle to get it on to its centre stand, and to help turn it round in its own length?

You can get all bikes down to the lowest setting and with an after market seat you can get a little lower but not much. It is less about your height and more about your inside leg measurement. I am 31" and can get one foot down on one side and toes down on the other when stopped lightly loaded. I can get and both feet firmly planted if panniers are loaded or I have a passenger on board.

There is no lifting handle but you can get one. See link.

Anyway most of your time your feet are on the pegs. Its only stopping and starting you need your feet down so just go for it. You will love it.

I'm 5'7" and 10.5 stone and can manage fine with a BMW Low Seat. I also had a R100RS and don't notice much difference getting my 07 GS up onto the centrestand. My particular methord is to stand on the left hand side, flick the centre stand down and putting my right foot on the bit that sticks out of the centre stand. I put my left hand on the left hand grip and keep the handlebars straight ahead and put my right hand on the rear carrier and push down with my right foot on the centre stand and up she comes onto the centre stand fine. This is not the way the dealer showed me to do it but I find it easier and more stable. Not sure if I am putting a strain on the centre stand the way I do it but its a similar way I have got all my BMWs (R60/5, R100RS, R100GS, and R1100RS) onto their centrestands.

Can you still turn the lump around once it's on its stand? Now I'm getting older and more feeble, this sort of stuff is important!
