Air cleaner question

Hi all,

I've just got back from a ride to Waars in Chelsea after going down for a ride in the sun. I asked the guys in store if the smaller air cleaners they had on the shelf were a straight swap for the standard bigger ones. They advised unfortunately not as you will need to buy the stage 1 Screamin Eagle Super Tuner as well as the air cleaner kit. I asked them for an idea of cost and nearly had a heart attack when they told me:

Stage 1 air filter kit - £111.53
Air filter cover - £39.81
EFI SE Super Tuner - £366.53
Labour - £89.00

Total cost (inc VAT) - £728.24:eek::eek::eek::eek: I wanted to scream "FOR A FECKIN AIR CLEANER!!!!!!"

The question is this....

Do i really need the Super Tuner? I'm assuming it's the same thing as a Power Commander and on previous bikes I've changed cans and air filters before without the need and the bikes have all run fine:nenau
 
I just changed my cans for V & H slip ons, didn't change the air filter, Warrs at Mottingham told me I didn't necessarily need the power commander but the bike would run better if re-mapped.

In the end I bit the bullet and had the full stage 1, now runs much smoother than when I just had the slip ons! Price seems about right to me....

I bought my first Buell from them in 2000, only went back for the first free service.....More pricks in there than a fucking international hedgehog convention.....Felt like burning the place down:mad:

When I came close to buying a street bob I visited Guildford and Southampton HD

Guildford quoted around £500 for forwards fitted........Southampton £340:rolleyes:

Watch the posh dealers...... They are used to the more money then sense brigade....find a good Indy will be cheaper still....
 
Have a word with the local boys in the HDRCGB. The site has a regional section and they'll put you in contact with the best indies in your area :thumb2

I often pop into Warrs for entertainment.

A couple of months ago i saw a salesman dealing with a "new to biking" customer.
You may well ask how did i know he was a "new to biking" customer ?

Pretty obvious, as he was being encouraged by the salesman to sit on all the bikes the "new to biking" customer was getting on all of them, awkwardly, from the righthand side of the bike :D
Being a salesman in Warrs must be like shooting fish in a barrel.
 
What most HD dealers won't tell you either is that the greater majority of Harleys run better on factory settings and factory exhausts.

The great "Stage 1 +" con involves building off the customer's sense of need for a "noisier" exhaust (for all kinds of reasons) ... so up comes the money for the pipes, the electronic computer/chip, the other bits, the fitting labour (incl. the reprogramming).

About 75% of the time, yes it's gruntier and growlier, and frightens small dogs, but sometimes it uses more fuel, makes the bike run .... well, not exactly "smooth", increases vibes, and can eventually leave the owner feeling a bit of an arse.

Other work is informing your insurer and hoping they don't have a pop at your premium, finger crossing for the MoT, and riding slowly past policemen and horses.

Getting it right can be more of an art than a science. And the owner is down by around £1K.

And I speak from experience, so I'm not lecturing anyone.

Just enjoy the experience. Whatever you eventually do, re-do and re-re-do before you either sell it or return it to factory settings, which is what many do (but leaving all the other goodies in place).

A mate of mine has worked for HD off and on for 20 years and could fill a book with his experiences.

(Mind you, he also worked for BMW and genuinely consider HDs less "trouble").
 
I have a 2007 TC96 Street Bob fitted with Screamin Eagle air filter and XIED's from http://www.nightrider.com/parts/ which richen up the mixture, it runs fine and I have done about 13,000 miles with them fitted with no problems.

You also need a plug in eliminator for the intake valve which is on the original filter backplate or it will show a fault on the engine management light.

I also removed the exhaust flap servo motor from behind the battery box and welded the flap open on the header,you need another plug in eliminator for this,I have road legal non catalyst HD slip-ons fitted.

Bought everything except the XIED's second hand for not a lot.

Benefits... pleasant intake roar and its easier to clean the pushrod tubes but thats about it.
 
I learned at great expense that Harley stage one is overpriced farkle. I ended up making mine work properly by fitting Fuelmoto cat free headers and a power commander 5. look up fuelmotousa.com and do a proper job.

On my old flstf ('90) i managed to find a real cheap s&s super 'e' carb and filter from the states, cost about £200.

It's the classic teardrop shaped air box, looked good. And the pumper carb livened thongs up a fair bit.

The standard pipes were quite restrictive, a quick look in the end revealed a blanking plug, so i chopped that out and all was well.

Save your cash on the stage 1 and don't bother.

Performance is adequate as standard [as is the noise]. Chucking £1000 [ish, for the full stage 1] at is only going to make it slightly more adequate.

I nearly went the stage 1 route but was too tight to part with the cash for something that should be supplied straight from the factory and not as a fairly pointless, very expensive extra.

If you're after more noise then don't push your earplugs in as hard. Louder pipes soon become an embarrassment on tour.

I think performance and noise have been pitched just right from the factory.
