I need to remove the air box on my LC, my local dealer has informed me that the clips on the airbox require a special pliers to open and resit the clips on the throttle body’s, bmw price for the pliers is eye watering (£153) anyone know of a cheaper alternative.

Have a look at what’s involved. There are many ways to avoid the dreaded special tool which is often used to speed up the job rather than make it impossible without. JJH

If your changing the front shock, in the manual it says the air box needs to come off, if you remove the fuel tank and slacken the air box bolts it can be pushed over a bit to reach the top mounting bolt and remove it :)

No special tools required just a good set of grips with a square face. I tried large pliers but found the mole grips worked best due to the angle of leverage. I assure you it's really easy with the right grips.

Second Picture - open.
Third picture - To pinch closed.

In view of the photos above showing how easy mole grips do the job, I'm not sure I'd have admitted that! :D Full marks for bravery!

This is going to sound silly, but any chance of a picture of the tool....

There is a tool on ebay, that I think is correct.... otherwise I will resort to molies.

Thanks for the tips, and the reason is I want to fit the bmw extra power socket (£43 for the kit), but it piggybacks off the front power socket, and the cabling runs under the airbox.

I used a pair of plumbers pliers. The jaws can be repositioned so the faces are always near enough parallel. But they can be a nightmare to refit.
I also managed to find some narrow band (9mm) worm clips in stainless. They are not easy to find and don’t confuse with ordinary 12mm bands. But they work just fine. Don’t over tighten and ignore if you can’t get narrow band clips.

This is the tool I found. £18 ebay. not purchased YET !

I have till Tuesday, before I can start... first day off since the bike arrived.

Above picture correct tool, the clips are used a lot of things now so won’t be wasted, they give almost 100% sealing with no distortion of the rubber sealing area.
