I am planning to buy a neoprene Airhawk for the riders seat of a 1200GS. What size is best? I've checked the Bykebitz site and using their dimensions for medium and small cruiser seats doesn't help when compared to the 1200GS seat. It looks as if the medium is too wide but the small is too long. Any practical help (including an offer of a secondhand one!) would be appreciated.
In all honesty the bike usage is currently second place to dining/kitchen chair usage. My wife is just home from hospital having had a "Birmingham hip re-surface" operation. Essentially a total hip replacement but with a minor revision in that the femur ball is not totally replaced with metalwork. Instead, the head of the femur is partially replaced with a mushroom shaped piece and a shorter locating pin is fixed into the femur shaft. With approx a 10" incision held together with clips (no they're not staples I was told) she's finding sitting on a cushioned chair pretty hopeless and I'm thinking an Airhawk would be ideal. After all, that's what a wheelchair comfort cushion is, albeit the wrong shape for future bike usage!
Guidance and offers appreciated folks. I need to move quickly on this one.
Incidentally, with my home town gridlocked today due to bridge repairs I used the GS to collect a King size "memory foam" mattress topper from the other side of town. Tricky to filter with but far, far quicker than car. (OK it was shrink wrapped to the size of a 40L holdall and fitted crosswise with pillion seat removed and Vario panniers mounted). Wherever and whenever, I find this machine Generally Successful. :thumb

My wife and I use the Airhark Budget Cruiser Medium £69.99 here
Can be repaired with paddling pool repair kits,as long as a seam is not damaged. Much cheaper than their neoprene variety.. but you probably get what you pay for :nenau

And it fits the 1200GS seats perfectly:

A definite best but IMHO

They might work but they look hideous....

Surely, only if one spends a lot of time looking out of one's a**e.
Beauty is in the eye of the posterior.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still unsure about the size. GrinningGSer, those look as if they're overhanging slightly and prone to wear at the seams. I'm assuming that even although they look like dead flounders they are inflated to "operating" pressure? I'm still tempted to the pillion style. My posterior is of the skinny runt size ie 30" waist etc so complete seat support probably isn't needed. And a choice of fabric too. Feck. :nenau Fair old price to make...eh....an a**e of the decision!

Operation pressure is actually a minimal amount of air such that they look, as you say, like 'dead flounders.' They actually work best that way and distribute the entire seating load evenly, sort of like sitting on moveable bubble wrap. They are no good when they have lots of air in, because they are compartmentalised and do not distribute load shifts.

The rider supports the bum and some inner thigh.. size is good

The pillion is too narrow IMHO

I am so pleased with them that I would buy them again
:D

I have a medium cruiser on my 950adv.It aint pretty but it works very well.....although i have barely used it cos my nephew used it when i went on my last hols. :)

How do they stay in place on the seats is there a velcrose strp system?? I am contemplating purchasing the same Airhawk but was a little worried about it disapearing when the bike is left - how secure are they?

Thanks in advance

Rik

They clip on with an elasatic strap which goes under the seat but when you go for a walkabouts you simply unhook it and slip it in ya missus's 'box'. :thumb

No real need for the use of straps, but they have filttings for this if required. They have a rubbery non slip base and really do stay put when sat on.

Of course- if you are riding offroad and standing on your pegs, that is a different matter.

When you get off.. roll them up and put them... somewhere

:D

Thanks for the advice.

Asked the missus about her box but she says it is much too overcrowded with cobbwebs and out of date Yoghurt, so may have to resort to the panniers.

Airhawk seat

I bought one for a 1200rs I made the mistake of buying. It did not help with comfort on that bike, it also moved underneath me every time I accelerated or braked and I did not like it.Sold the bike and kept the seat. Tried it on my gsa and again did not help me with comfort and moved, felt like sitting on wobbly jelly! Therefore it is for sale. Offres?

Which model and how much?

Same question from me. (Feels like an interview panel). On the dining chair thing as per my original post - great news, she's getting on fine with an ordinary cushion, AND walking 2 miles (twice) each day, AND sleeping in comfort all night. Two weeks after the op'. Fantastic. If you need a hip replacement then the Nike advert is right - just do it. Eh, where were we? Oh yeah, I still fancy an Airhawk for the bike. Medium Cruiser I'm being advised. What ye got?

Rustle,
Have got a medium cruiser on an 1150 low seat and whilst it does add height and width it is worth it for the comfort factor. Being one of the vertically challenged it more than makes up the difference between the standard seat and the painful plank BWM market as the low seat.
If you have any questions give me a ring on 07730 925861 and I will happily answer them. I am only 5 minutes from Bykebitz so can easily give you comparisons on sizing
Regards
Matt
