The Mystic is the last of the Airheads, alongside the Basic. It is effectivelly the same as the R100R with the exception of the seat, and rear subframe. Plus a couple of other parts.

They are quite highly sort after and probably the best looking of all the Airheads.

Prices are considerably higher than the older bikes too. Expect to pay over 3K

Biggest difference over the R100R is the twin disc front. They use a lot of K series parts eg front end. Good low speed handling and the most comfortable standard airhead seat I have used. Gearboxes seem to be smoother on the later airheads.

Nice basis for a custom build......

Thanks, I`m having a look at it tomorrow............:thumb

Probably one of the best airheads (as long as it's not an 800) if you don't like it there's no hope for you.

Are you sure you're ready for an airhead? They're pretty awful bikes unless you have the bug.

Less power is not a problem, I`m trying to slow down and planning to reap the benefits of my index linked pension for a long long time :D. Seriously, I have had two long trips this year, the first was in a group, which enjoyable as it was, was travelling at speeds I wished were slower and although I travelled as 'tail end charlie' so I didn't hold anyone up, I would have wanted it to be more relaxed. The second was a loner trip to the west coast of Ireland, when I didn't once go over 60 and for the most part was travelling between 40- 50mph, appreciating the scenery etc and I really enjoyed it. Now for that second trip I think something like the Mystic would have been ideal. Of course so would have been a GS, which I dont have now, or my XChallenge, once I sort out some luggage carrying ability. I was on an ST1300, which, fine bike that it is (was....I`ve sold it) was not the ideal machine for either of my trip so far this year.

You'll need a good pension with fuel prices and an airhead. MPG will be around mid 30's to low 40's.

Looking at it later today Rob, will let my heart rule my head, condition of the bike will be my most important consideration, chrome parts and service history, unless you can advise anything else to look for.

Check front disc wear and for rust in tank.
With those miles if it has a documented service history there shouldn't be much wrong. If you are tall you might find the riding position a bit cramped. Good luck :thumb

unless you can advise anything else to look for.

Ominous clunking from the drive shaft - you have to regard these as service items it's just nice to do it at your leisure some time in the future.

gearbox should change clearly and will probably be better than the oilheads as you go though the gears.

Look for weeping round the underside of the clutch/engine joint.

the rubber seals round the bottom of the pushrod tubes should be dry.

Charge light should go out around 1,000 rpm.

To be honest there's always going to be something that gets missed it's just trying to avoid the expensive ones.

You're far safer buying road bikes than GS's because generally they don't invite the abuse that GS's are given.

Hopefully it'll be a nice bike for you.

Just got a text from the seller saying its gone, thought we had a deal at £3K as well, no principles some people:blast

Err, All the R100R's are twin discs. Plus the Mystic has the same forks.

Looking at the pic above, I'm thinking it's a modified R100R. Not a Modified Mystic. Wrong subframe.

Is it your's? Why swap the lower subframe for the standard one? :nenau

Not according to BMW Motorcycle Buyer's Guide (Zimmerman) or the examples for sale over here. Maybe US and Oz delivered bikes were different to UK spec

Bike pictured is a net sourced favorite of mine which I always understood was Mystic based but I don't know for sure -it just looks sweet :thumb

I'm almost ceirtain that the only 1990's R100 with a single disc is the GS. It's easy to remove the seat retension bar from the R100 tank too. As long as you don't go at it like a bull in a china shop :D
