Hi all, just got a 90 R100GS. the bike rides well but needs some TLC on the frame and im planning on stripping down to give it the attention it deserves. I need to point out here that I don’t have much experience in this area but really want to do this myself. My question is: Am I stone mad and is this out of my reach….should I get it done by someone more experienced?? :nenau

Plan Ahead...

...and then plan ahead again, and then check and recheck.

I did something similar to my R100RT and didn't pay enough attention when dismantling and now the reassembly is proving difficult at times. :blast

Good Luck.

If you don't already have one get a decent workshop manual, Clymer is better than Haynes IMPO but either are essential for what your planning.

When you say
I need to point out here that I don’t have much experience in this area/QUOTE] it's not easy to quantify just how much knowledge you have but the bikes are pretty simple compared to the more modern varieties just as long as you take your time and have the proper tools. On that point be aware there are some which you can't just nip down to Hallfords for so as has been said plan ahead. :thumb

Oh yes, welcome to the collective! :aidan

Hi Wildgeese and you're very welcome.
Do what I do. As you take it apart take lots of photos and then store all the small bits in endless ziplock plastic bags and mark on the bag in permanent marker exactly what bits are in the bag. That way then the rebuild is much simpler.
I hope you've got lots of space and a decent toolbox.
Good luck :thumb2

Thanks all, Have the space and tools. Got manuals ordered and will be spending about a week studying them before I touch the bike. The simplicity of the bike is one of the big reasons I got it. Have a 1200GSadv and wanted something a bitter easy and more reliable. Im sure Ill be posting plenty seeking solid advice, and will probably updated post with pics etc

1200 oilhead you say? Be aware it's a slippery slope your on buying an Airhead, next thing you'll know the oilhead will be in the for sale section, it's a common occurence. :augie

Pictures and updates are essential, gives the rest of us something to read in between emptying collostomy bags and drinking our sanotogen.

As for solid advice, plenty of ruffage and a regular routine will sort your solids!:rob
