After getting a bit fed up of the 3.5k flat spot on my 1200gs ive taken the plunge and bought a set of Akrapovic headers. Getting rid of the cat and see that works. I considered an end can but read some reports of headers improving mid range and low end fueling. It's coming tomorrow and the bike is sitting in the garage with the bits off. I'll post the results when the rain stops!!!

Would it be too rude to ask how much?

You might want to consider having the fuelling sorted. I'd be concerned that decatting an '08 GS would result in it running much too lean at certain points.

Agree, the fuelling might not be much better without a remap or PC.

Good luck with the headers but i can't see them sorting out the flat spot issue to your satisfaction as that is down to the fuelling and as has been said could well cause more issues as it will be running even leaner than it is which is factory set as too bloody lean in the first place this could easily burn out the valves

Strongly recommend a re map or something to sort the fuelling

well..... to open a can of worms.... I've fitted the full Akro system - headers and end can, de-flapped, and have also fitted a Power Booster Plug (http://www.boosterplug.com/shop/boosterplug-bmw-r1200gs-181p.html) to my 2010 GS, i get about 48mpg, superb throttle response, no flat sports whatsoever. and a nice burble exhaust note to boot, and not that is something that i try to do but she will pop the front wheel on acceeleration in 4th if the rev's are right with no effort at all.. there are sceptics of course, but having fitted them i have no intention of considering a remap - she runs like an absolute dream...grin factor 10!!

No can of worms there !

The flat spot inherent on the Gs is a result of poor / overly lean fuelling which i guess is emphasised at a certain rev range when the Air fuel ratios are at the worst they can be
You have solved your problem with the booster plug thing which alters the fuelling. Not as complex or as effective a s a re map IMO but goes some way to solving the fuelling issue.

fitted a full Akrapovic system, headers , y piece and end can, along with a booster plug. Runs great . Just changed the plugs during a service and no sign of overheating. 1200GS (06) 33K miles no issues.

Headers came this this morning and took half an hour to put on. Quality is excellent.
Sounds a slightly throatier and revs cleanly but I've not road tested it yet because its blowing a hooly and lashing it down in north east england!!
It'll have to wait til the weekend when I'm next off

Very impressed with the extra go. The slight flat spot at 3.5 is still there only slightly reduced. Above 4k the difference is very noticeable. Much more free revving and much more fun when you want it to be

If your bike's a keeper your next best investment is a good remap. Talk to Geoff at Hilltop.

Can you do any harm ?

Reading this with some interest as iam wanting to go down this route for the same reasons as every one else, I have a full akrapovic system ready to go on my 2011 TC GSA not fitted as yet as I would like to have the hilltop remap and money is tight at the moment. My question would be due to the lean fuelling is it ok to fit the full system and then ride the 160 miles approx straight to hilltop or ride with standard system and let hilltop fit the akrapovic when they do the remap.
Cheers Jon :thumby:
