Akrapovic headers

Reading this with some interest as iam wanting to go down this route for the same reasons as every one else, I have a full akrapovic system ready to go on my 2011 TC GSA not fitted as yet as I would like to have the hilltop remap and money is tight at the moment. My question would be due to the lean fuelling is it ok to fit the full system and then ride the 160 miles approx straight to hilltop or ride with standard system and let hilltop fit the akrapovic when they do the remap.
Cheers Jon :thumby:

Fit the system, then ride to Hilltop. Plenty of people just fit the system and don't remap at all, so it'll work fine. The remap really will make the biggest difference.:thumb

I've had it about 15 months which is 3 months off the record!! The headers address (just about) the sports bike urge. A remap might be on the cards

Iam going to sound a right numpty again but the akraprovik headers I have are the ones which come in about 4 bits with springs to hold them altogether am I right in thinking all I need to do is give them a light coat of copper grease to ease them together rather than exhaust paste to seal the joint.

you should have got assembly paste with the headers, dont use exhaust paste

I have an Akraprovic Ti system. It was seriously loud but easy to sort out with universal baffles.

The ECU will self adapt to a different exhaust system but will struggle if you mess with the intake system as well. The fuelling should be no different with an Akra system than with an OEM catalyst system but the Akra will feel quicker if only because it's lost that expensive cork under the gearbox.

The standard fuelling is very weak risking exhaust valve damage. Plain 95 RON rule causes the spark timing to be retarded wasting fuel but worse causing overly hot exhaust gas. Posh petrol at least 97 RON will allow the engine to use more of of the energy so exhaust temperatures improve. I avoid plain petrol like the plague but posh is actually cheaper per mile. A no brainer IMO.

At low throttle settings the GS can be running air fuel at 20:1 hence the reluctance to pick up quickly and propensity to stalling when hot in traffic. Weak fuelling like that its serious stress on the exhaust valves and really can't be doing much the NOx emission figures. The aftermarket exhaust wont improve that but should not make it worse. Booster plug gives more fuel over the whole rev range so if you mostly ride around town it well feel better. If you mostly "make progress" its likely to over fuel the engine. At least that was my experience.

I've gone the Power Commander V route but a Hilltop remap is the more elegant option. I lost about 1mpg on long distance runs but a fair bit more around town which does support the issue of very weak fuelling at low throttle settings.

Thanks for the heads up on that I bought it second hand so I will have to source some of the special stuff any suggestions where the best place to get some is ?
Cheers Jon

Totally agree with you re the quality of fuel I always try to use the 97 Ron and would agree that the cheaper 95 Ron for the couple of pence difference is not really worth it performance and mpg wise , as for the cheap supermarket stuff I avoid it like the plague for all the vehicles I use
