Akraprovic exhaust

I have the akro on my new 09 1200gsa.

I initially had the baffle in and I honestly thought I had wasted my money. Once you take the baffle out- it makes sense! Lots of growl and noise from the exhaust oiver the engine noise!

I now really like it.

£160 for stainless can (though that was 18mths ago, may be a bit more now) and they fit it for that price, (but it only takes 10 mins).

I've got to be honest. I only got the Akro system because it was offered to me second hand and so cheaply. It was included in a deal with Ohlins and a tank conversion kit at a price I couldn't say no to. I almost certainly wouldn't have replaced the standard exhaust if I'd had to buy new, simply because other than the lovely noise and perhaps the slightly better looks, the difference in performance, if any, wouldn't have been worth the cost.

Having said that, we're GS owners, we are genetically disposed towards fiddling.

Bilco if this is right why in Bike (Ride(?) was one or the other) magazine dyno tests on ZX12R does Akro system produce 15 bhp gain and Remus and others on 5-6 bhp? I agree a can is probably the least important bit but if doing system or down pipes, shape, internals etc all make a difference.

An end can test in Motorrad magazine showed that aftermarket cans make no improvement at all (power and torque). BMW did an excellent job on their exhaust system (end can a bit heavy, though), that's all.

Other bike manufacturers haven't done so well ... :augie

I meant aftermarket end can test for R1200GS, of course.:blast

Got a carbon fibre acro on by 07 gs and love it,
sounds awesome
looks awesome
and saves so much weight over the original which weughs as much as a small house,
have the baffles out, (didnt even bother trying it with them in!) and wouldny have it any other way!
If you can afford it, why not? your money and your bike so do what you want, but you can get remus for cheaper and they are not that different, i just prefered the look of the acro, its all down to personal choice

Good thread! :thumb2

I'm assuming (other than weight) that there's no CAT in the R1200 GS end can then? Sounds silly but the FZ1 I sold last year had one in the main exhaust and another in the end-can.

Changed both and fitted a power commander - the bike went from 136bhp at the wheel to 155 bhp - enough to pull your arms off at any revs :pullface

I'm thinking of fitting a set of remus headers and keeping the current end-can....

Whatdyerreckon?

You assume correct the akro exhaust is MUCH lighter and there is no cat in the GS standard .
if it is more Mid range power then ive been told the headers is the thing to change as this loses the cat which gives more mid range power and a better sound.

My opinion on changing the can is , ONLY MY OPINION MIND :toungincheek

1, lost the wieght of the standard can.:JB

2, Sounds is much better than standard :clap

3, Only been out a couple of times since putting it on but seems to be bit more alert, but that might just be me:augie

4, looks much better,:drool

5, When i sell/change bike i can always get a very good price for it or put it on my next GS :thumb

I have the Akraprovic on my '08 GS. (My son gave it to me as a birthday present. :thumb) The baffle is still in so I don't notice a lot of difference is the sound. The performance might be a little better. It does save a whole lot of weight and it looks better.

It`s been said before on this thread that the headers give the power hike and not the can. If it`s power you want, get the headers, if it`s solely noise get the can:thumb

I have done 3000 miles on my 08 GSA with standard set up.
I have just fitted an Akro slip on end can only with baffle in and this has definately improved throttle response, power delivery through the rev range(ironed out 5000rpm flat spot) and sound especially the roar in higher rev range.
I have also tried baffle out, but although this sounds better and deeper, the performance is not as impressive as with the baffle in!
I had the same experience with an XR 650 supermoto, straight through baffles out pipe was loud as hell but performance was greatly improved by a well engineered arrow road legal pipe due to back pressure.

To sum up, I think the un corked feel of just the end can has made the bike feel perfect now instead of the asmatic standard can!

Just my opinion!!

By the way, I started riding a R800RT when I was 18, now done a full curcuit of fireblades etc to a 08 gsa. I am 36 and totally agree with other obsessed adicts that the gs is now the only bike for me......I love it!!:bounce1

Got a Bos for £200 IIRC, that was a reasonable performance / sound / weight option IMO.

£500 for an exhaust, which apart from having a cool name and a slightly better sound does what?

Did you buy my old one on ebay? I sold it for £160 (full system, carbon) and was kicking myself for not setting a reserve!

Why Bother????

If you want out and out performance go buy a Sportsbike, the GS is not inteneded to be a full on performance bike, and Yes I do know what I am talkign about been riding Sportsbikes all my life up until last year then decided to take a change in direction on the road. I still keep my R6 racer in the garge for trackdays to get my performace fix. To be honest the same can be said for those clowns who waste untold amounts on Ohlins suspension on these bikes, the geometry isnt set for "performance cornering" the standard suspension units will out perform the skills of most GS riders, (unless they are ex racers like me I now there a few lurking here), if it is the looks you are after, be pathetic paint the spring yellow and buy some Ohlins stickers on ebay.

Oh and stop bloody moaning about the bikes, if they are so crap sell it and bugger off and fine something else to moan about !

Who's moaning? I dont think anyone is in this thread. Chill dude...

My only reason for changing the can would be to reduce weight and with the adventure this would be a good thing, but instead of spending more money to lighten my adventure I purchased a g650x challenge (150kg) for off road riding and the adventure for road and gravel riding.
