I've just fitted a Akro Can......will there be any benefits of going the full hog and fitting headers....yes I know they will be lighter but what else can I expect.....apart from parting with the loot !

Ive a single Cam if that makes any difference....I guess a remap would be the answer ?

If it's performance you're after then the headers (decat) will make more of an improvement than the can, and, in my case, more noise. Probably best to have a remap or fit a Power Commander as the engine will be running quite lean. Go for it.

Thanks....I did guess that....

right a search for some cheapish......headers !!

Headers and can you don't really need a remap so long as you still have the baffles in the akra. Agreed, the can makes no difference it's the headers that let it breath a little better. Same can be achieved by chipping out the material in the cat from stock headers.

How awkward is it to do that ???

There are a few threads on it and a couple of ways to do it. In short you can chop the end off and drill/chisel the inside oil and weld the end back on. Other option is slice the side off cut out the insides and weld it back up. 1st option is probably the least visible and probably easiest. As to how easy, depends how good you are with your hands and if you can weld or know someone who can.

A can on it's own makes more noise and, if you're lucky, the same power as standard. The de cat headers seem to give a bit more lift near the red line, plus a slightly raspier exhaust note even with the standard can.
Many of us have cut the standard headers, removed the cat and had it re welded. Works just as well as spending lots of money on a Remus, etc. You can easily pick up a set of standard headers on eBay for not much money if you want to keep the originals. That's what I did.
Even with the de cat headers and/or noisier can, the engine will still be running as lean as it does standard. The bike's ECU compensates for any changes you will make. Won't blow up, but will still be harsh, have a flat spot and surge now and again.
They all do that, sir.
As greenman says, you'll get most benefits from fixing the fueling.
Choices are a re map, Hilltop is the preferred around here but make sure you're keeping it for a while.
Power Commander, works well but issues with lots of connectors that can take in water and cause problems. Bit obvious if you 'forget' to tell your insurance company.
My preferred is the AF-XiED units. These manipulate the signals from the O2 sensors to enrich the fueling by up to 8%.
All have similar costs and will turn your bike into a smooth, torqey thing.
Forget booster plugs and similar. The ECU will adapt them out after a couple of tanks of fuel.

I have the Akra full titanium shotgun system on my bike with a Power Commander. Without baffles it really wakes up above 6K revs and bounces off the rev limit. It really surprised me when i first fitted the PC. But it LOUD I mean REALLY LOUD.

With one baffle you can tell the top end power has softened but its really not much and the noise is now It civilised with two baffles, but you can tell its getting plugged up.

However at normal engine speeds its impossible to say if the Akra headers do anything much. They might but would need a rolling road to tell. All that fluff and bling at the top end is also just - bling. You cant use it and keep alive never mind the driving licence.

In the end, I think my Ti pipes look cool and, as I bought the whole system used for 1/3 of the new costs, I'm quite happy to know I have that power if I really want to do that track day. Its a bit of bling and no less nice for that.

Remus systems are well made with high quality stainless but have larger bore headers for better top end. That has to affect power response at everyday speeds. The Akraprovics have smaller front headers with a cone taper just under the cylinders into a bigger pipe. The tapers are not in exactly the same space so I believe the intention is to reduce disadvantage at low revs but still get an extraction effect at high revs. My pipes don't have the blueing at the Y joint that you'll see on many aftermarket headers so maybe they have found a way to improve gas flow at that 2:1 joint.

Keep the OEM headers for when you sell the bike. Just bag them up and put into the loft for safe keeping.

I bought a cheap disc cutter from B&Q for £17. Cut the cat along the the back weld and dug the cat material out. Will take a little while, but it's not rocket science.
Local engineering firm re welded it for £20. Looks exactly as standard.
The standard headers are not simply pipes welded together, but rather two halves welded together with the front pipes attached.
To replace the cat with a pipe with the correct shape would require a lot more skills and be beyond most of us.
Not going to get into the whole booster plug thing. Had one on my K1600GT which helped for a while but made no difference to my GS TC.
I've read evidence that has been measured about how they're tuned out by the ECU, but only opinion on how successful they are.
Had one, even paid £90 for a new one.
If you feel it's working on your bike, I'm glad. If you ever come across any actual evidence on its effectiveness, please share it with us.

I did have a read up on these AF-XiED units a while back...... I guess USA order only ?.... I've used PC s a few times on various bikes but always curious to try plug and play bits..... might give it a go considerable saving against PC...plus I've only Single Cam bike....

A set of well flowed headers will make a significant difference when the engine is remapped. The Akras are more likely to preserve low speed flexibility while giving good flow at high revs.

The cost of a Power Commander with rolling road tune is much the same as a Hilltop remap. I would rather have a true expert tune the bike but got my PC at a low price. It will do for now but I would never go that way at new prices.

I had my standard headers decat'd last year and fitted a remus end can.
A few weeks ago I fitted aftermarket decat headers (thanks again John) and I find this far superior to the DIY standard header system. My thinking is that when the cat is cut out there is a big open cavern where it once was and what that does to the exhaust flow can't be ideal.
My Remus can now sounds the way it should and the pick up is a good bit stronger from about 4000rpm upwards.

Just my tuppence!

Sent using hocus pocus........... boo!
