Alarm for the GS..

Some rats tried nicking my pride and joy the other night. They smashed the ignition, pulled out wires and got the dash lit up but didn't get it started.. I don't have an alarm.. Can I have some recommendations for alarm manufacturers, please?

I have the BMW alarm which is not Thatcham approved, but works well - i.e. goes off when i forget to set. Previously i've had Datatool alarms which worked on my last motorcycle for 13 years...

The best solution is a BFO lock and chain, making sure the chain is connected to something solid and is not able to touch the ground.

Don't wanna upset you, but now the scrote bags know your bike's there they'll probably be back ... and better equipped!

As said, big FO chain and lock, ground anchor, trip wire to actuate an alarm in the house, movement sensor in garden/garage.

I once rigged up a trip wire to activate a mouse trap, but the wire fell on a .22 blank set in a small steel plate ... worked a treat ... but don't forget it

yep I have the bmw one fitted when new, its the type you arm when you want to with the remote (not self arming) I only use it when i feel i'm in a dodgy area and walk away from the bike. Il remember to set it when i'm up your way

A lot of people find alarms a pain, they nearly all draw power if only slight, like micky said if you can get a motion sensor light if its possible near the bike, theives hate to be put in the spotlight.

Mind saying that if someone wants something bad enough they will take it, but maybe you can make it difficult so they walk away from yours the heavy chain and lock could help.

The damage the scum bags do trying to get something is bad enough its a shame your not their at the time to have a word to the wise in their shell like.

I use an alarmed disc lock, made by Oxford. Probably not as secure as a proper alarm, but it is both sensitive and loud, it would alert me if it was outside the house. As it is the bike is in a garage a short distance away so probably wouldn't wake me, but might hep to deter an opportunist scrote. Best of all it was much cheaper than a proper fitted alarm, and you can have one in action in minutes.

Sorry to hear about the damage, hope you get it fixed up without too much trouble.

I've checked the crime figures by postcode.
I've bought a house in the best area, in a cul-de-sac with nosy neighbours.
I've got a locking brick garage.
It has security lights inside and out.
The garage alarm is integrated into the house alarm.
The bike has an alarm.
The bike has an immobiliser.
The bike is chained to a brick wall.

If I never go out, it's safe.

Most of the time alarms are useless.People ignore them and thieves know how to disarm them.Was your bike on the street or in your garden?A ground anchor and a big chain if it`s in the garden with a security light will help.Much harder if on the street as thieves will lift it into a van,chain to a lamp post maybe?? It sounds to me as if it was local "kids" looking for a joy ride as i think pro`s would have put it into a van.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I don't think it was the pikey's that stole two of my other bikes when I lived in another house in the same area because, like you say they would have had it away in a van and they didn't this time. They'd ripped wire out and got the dash lit up and been trying to bump it off in gear. The igition is f****** and is 220 quid for a new one (not fitted) this is less than my ins excess so I'll buy one and fit myself.

The bike is chained to the wall in my yard side ways on with the anchor about a foot and a half from the floor. Another resident usually parks his car in here as well and backs upto my bike but hasn't lately. When he does he turns on the security light as he controls the switch.

I have heard that Argos (other shops are available) sell bike sheds for about 150 notes so will visit them at the weekend. I'm thinking the bike will look good in my living room over winter, tho. Thanks for the responses, I've found these guys on the internet...

Hi craig sorry to hear about attempted theft at least you still have it and its not burn't out over the fields, ive had similar problems with enduro bikes in the past, what i used to do when i got home from laining i would wash the bike on the drive (in a very quite close) but some scum bag must have noted this and one morn when i went into the garage i could see daylight from the rear they had claimed over nxt door and tried to get thro the rear of my sectional garage but gave up, they never tried to get in via the front door as the dog would have heard em and ive got the meanest bull dog going he's the devil's child and would rip there c0cks off, so i was lucky but my mates have had many enduro bike stolen in the past and are very lucky if ever to get em back, the kids wont touch sports bikes they only want enduro/off rd type so they can ride around the fields.

I've got a spare ignition lock if you don't want to splash out on a new one, not sure what is to be done with matching your key though, I`d have to look at it, but I`m assuming they can be re-keyed just the same as a pannier lock. john

Had an alarm/immobiliser on the bike when I bought it. It immobilised it one day and I couldn't get to work. Removed it, they're more trouble than they're worth. BFO chain is what you need, plus I've bought one of these to install between mine and the good lady's bikes in our garage.
