Thinking about purchasing an OE BMW alarm.
Interested in feedback, alternatives, cost to buy and fitting ( is it a DIY fit ).
Struggling to find cost on internet search and dealer gone home for the day.
Cheers guys.

OE isn't Thatcham approved, so insurer's aren't interested in discount etc. As GS's and the like are now high risk, most insurers are often looking for a tracker fitted.

If, it was my money, I'd fit a tracker or alpha dot/datatag/smartwater too before an alarm.

Go for the tracker option.

Alarms dont stop the bike being nicked, they go wrong and fuck up your day and no one takes a blind bit of notice of them

He alarm is approx £300 fitted. The alarm needs to be coded to the bike (and keyless fob) so either dealer fit or possibly GS-911.
Alarm is OK but can be temperamental, the siren isn’t that loud and auto-arm is a pain in the neck when refuelling, moving the bike around etc so leave it on manual in the dash. Like any alarm, if the bike is left for a long time there will be some drain in the battery. As has been said it isn’t thatcham Approved so no insurance discount most likely. I have it just so it makes a noise in the garage if someone’s trying to nick it. The older F800-style alarm has a useful ferry mode that disables the movement sensor - can’t remember if the R1200 implementation is the same.

Nothing stops them stealing your bike, all you can do is try and make it as hard as possible. an alarm has it uses, as it is the first point of hesitation, it might just make the difference, trackers are of no use until the bike has been stolen, as for insurances it is now only a few pound cheaper, and expensive to fit and pay annual subs.
I have an alarm, it is fine so far at least always self arming, annoying though if you knock bike or forget keys to get something out of top box.
