As some of you know, I've run 3 trips up to Alaska which have been very successful and everyone has enjoyed the experience which is the main aim. I decided not to run one in 2014 as I needed a break from the trip and it's pretty hard work. I also fancied a nice little run around Yellowstone which will happen in September 2014.

Anyhoo, I've already been asked if I will run Alaska in 2015 and yes I'm going to definitely do it but I want to do something a little different and change the format. There are some very iconic dirt roads up there which really need doing and as we only do the Dalton normally, I'd like to run some of the other. I've started working on it and here are my initial scribblings:

3 week trip (down from the usual 4 as it's easier to get time off)
Airfreight bikes directly into Anchorage Alaska
Across to Fairbanks via Denali National Park then ride the Dalton Hwy up to Deadhorse and back
Down to Dawson City via the Top of the World Hwy
Ride the Dempster Hwy to Inuvik and back
Head south the Watson Lake via the Campbell Hwy which is rarely ridden.
Ride the Cassiar Hwy down to Hyder then the Salmon Tail Glacier.
Down through British Columbia. There are some good dirt roads alongside the main highways.
Into the USA and through Washington State to the East of Seattle on small back roads
Through Oregon across to the coast and then down to Santa Rosa on as many small back and fire roads as I can find.
Bikes loaded into a container and shipped back to the UK

This would be do-able on a big GS but I would think a lighter bike would be better due to the amount of dirt roads we would do. I'm thinking a GS800 of a KTM990 would be ideal for this but any good traillie bike over 650cc would be good. I'd loved to have done this on my KTM640 Adv if I hadn't been stupid enough to sell it!! The big dirt highways up in Alaska and the Yukon can be either fairly straightforward or nigh on impossible depending on the weather so you always have to be aware of this. For example, we ran the Dalton in July in perfect weather but one week later, it was just about impassable due to the rain. The Dempster can be exactly the same but I will always have a plan B just in case.

If anyone fancies this, pm me and I can do a lot more work on it. I realise it is very dirt orientated and won't appeal to everyone so I will do an optional road only trip to run alongside it at the same time. :thumby:

Oh, I would think the ideal time for this is end of June and into July 2015.

Dirt orientated sounds good to me. I'd love the chance to go and being that far ahead I stand half a chance of being able to organise myself. :D Do you have an idea on approximate shipping/daily costs?

It's sat unused in Nicks garage. Along with a slightly older silver one and a rally husky. :thumb

Post retirement job for me Chris, so if yer still doing them in seven years time .... :thumb

Certainly interested Chris, could you stick me down as a possible please?

Interested for sure, but hey, just to fuck your thinking up, I'd be two up :thumb2

And yes, fully appreciate what that means in every sense and implication.

I could also be interested in this "2 UP", any info costs etc appreciated:thumb

Ooohh, Chris, you are a very, very bad man.

After the first trip of 2012 I was ready to turn around and do the second trip as well. If it wasn't for the fact that I had a business to get back to I would have done. I rode quite a lot more dirt that trip than some of the other guys as I did a few detours from your route. I rode the Blackwater Road from Quesnel around the south west of Prince George rejoining the planned route on the Vanderhoof Road, it was about 90 miles and another 80 miles when I took a side trip from Topley on the Yellowhead Highway to Babine Lake and took the Granisle Cutoff trail to loop on almost to Smithers. Fantastic country, this is Babine Lake.

2015 looks very, very enticing.

Yamaha S10 instead of an 1150GS.

I fancy going going back:thumb2
But would be 2 up and am not all that keen on dirt ( unless I am on my dr)
Also would want to go stateside for longer about 6 weeks
Just road ish for me :thumb2
What'd ya think. Chris ?
The wife loved every min of the last one. But I don't do 2 up dirt:thumb

I'm working on this and will be doing a pure road route as an option because there has been a lot of interest.

I'm hoping to do a Coast to Coast as well so you could ship in on the East coast on that container and then ship back on another. There is another one of last years merry band who wants something similar so where there is a will there is a way:thumby:

Better get my thinking cap on;)

Well, you did say you wanted to branch out a little and widen the appeal ;)

I'm having a pre trip meeting for this years jaunt to Yellowstone on saturday 15th March 2014 at Adventure Bike Warehouse www.adventurebikewarehouse.co.uk. As well as going through that trip with the folks who have signed up and a few who are interested in the last couple of places, I'm happy to go through the bones of this trip as well. It's coming together well so I'll just about have it all sorted by then.

Anyway, it's a chance to dig your bike out and have a nice ride across to ABW to have a blather about this Alaska or any other trip to the USA or Morocco.

I have already booked up onto the Yellowstone trip. I'm also considering the Alaska trip for the following year, though with thoughts on making it a bigger ride. East to West then up to meet Chris in Alaska. Anyone else have similar ideas..??
