I did this crossing a couple of weeks ago.

You’ll need your V5, and I recommend you take cash to change into local currency and bring a pen.

Turned up at Algeciras, bought a ticket (€68 one way with Transmed/Armas). After getting an exit stamp from the border police, I rode onto the ferry and a nice man put ratchets through the engine frames to secure it. There were barely 10 vehicles on the ferry.

You’ll need to fill in an Arrivals form - small piece of paper with your details and suchlike in it (see other threads on this!). On this ferry there was a stack of them near the snack bar at the rear of the ferry.

About 30mins into the crossing, Moroccan border control opened a booth in the middle of the ship - queue up, present passport and arrivals form, and it gets stamped.

When disembarking, they check for this stamp shortly after leaving the boat ramp.

Then into border control - they seemed to be unloading all the cars. I got bumped to the front and asked to open my panniers. They asked for my “carte verte” - this is the V5. This and my passport went off to an office for my carnet to be issued. In the meantime I got asked if I had any drones or maps (no drone, no paper maps either).

With my carnet, I progressed on again - only for my carnet to be checked at a final checkpoint.

Then just beyond this, the portacabins for money changing and insurance - https://w3w.co/lugging.qualifies.retelling

€50/500MAD for 5 days’ cover (seemed to be the shortest amount of time offered) at the CAT booth. They also change money - I found this out on my return as the other money changers were closed. You can also buy a sim - I was fine with my Airalo eSIM.

Return journey - they stop selling tickets 2hrs before the ferry departs, so be prepared for a wait. I paid 596MAD/£49 for a one way ticket - again with Transmed/Armas. Ticket offices are behind the money changers -

and I wandered over to change my MAD back into Euros.

They checked my carnet at border control.
Then they lined up a bunch of vehicles and ran an x-ray van over them. Then started to get all the cars and motorhomes unloaded - but I got waved through. Then it was just another ticket check and a random hunt for the queue for my ferry.

Nothing to do on the boat - everything was done in the port at Algeciras.

Fairly straightforward in my opinion.

Crossing over to Tangier Med is so much more civilised than the Ceuta route :thumb2

Thank you for sharing your info and experience.

Maybe I used the wrong word - perhaps “temporary import permit” is better.

I got a credit-card-sized piece of paper after showing my V5. I think it shows you are temporarily importing the vehicle.

The insurance booth wants to see this - and he was very clear that I needed to keep this safe otherwise I might not be able to get the bike out of the country.

When I returned, the very first checkpoint asked for it and matched the details to the physical bike. I don’t know what happens if you don’t have it.

Ok, yes, then that seems right - carnet has to be paid for and implies some other obligations.

Thanks for clarifying
