Can any boddy tell why people from Whitby area call Scarbrough folk Algerenos? I have been told it means (weak man)

Yes you are right Chandos, in the days of sail a spanish sailing ship got into
difficulties off Scarbrough but the rescue attempt was poor as the fishermen did not have the strength to row past the break water.
