Just got home with my new bike and realised that I left my old panniers in the locked position, which means I can't unlock them with the new key.

I'm ok with re-coding locks but I've never tried to remove them in the locked position before. Is this possible? The latches are in the closed position aswell I hasten to add.

If not then I'll ring the dealer on Tuesday to get them unlocked with the old key so I can remove them.

It seems you have reached a very satisfactory solution to your problem.

Dealer's ----> Pick up key -----> Turn -----> Unlock.

PS You used to be able to open them with the hard plastic tag of the silly 'dust cap' thing that BuMW fit (or fitted) to keep grot out of the lock. A very thin screwdriver, a short length of an Acco clip (or something similar) may well do it. If nothing else it will while away the hours before Tuesday.

As far as I know - even if the locks are in the unlocked position, you still need the original key to remove the locks.

Seems to me like you need to go to whoever has the key...bit of a pain I know but hey ho.

No you don't! You take a phillips to the pannier & simply fumble with the tumblers until your key unlocks it.

And why should you be able to unlock a locked pannier without the key? :blast

What if the key is lost then?

So we're saying it can't be done without the key then? No worry I'll just phone the dealer on Tuesday. Only took my old bike in today so it's not like it'll have gone anywhere by then!

Silly old me, just didn't think about the old panniers until I got home!

If key is lost, then its tough ! Drill the fekkers out. Or call a locksmith. Probably cheaper to drill them out and replace as they are <£15 ea.

To be honest, if the dealer was doing their job properly they should have reminded you.

As your old bike has only just gone in, then you'll be fine.

I’ll delete it buddy, to stop the cat fight but I got the information of this site and was welcome for it to reduce the expense from a lock smith. It’s not really a security issue, as to do the job if the boxes where on a bike you would have to levitate upside down approximately at a 45 degree angle with you head at the height of the box itself. :rob

Security breach alert! WARNING! WARNING!

You can also open them with:

A can opener

A jemmy

A pair of (decent) pliers

Dynamite

Swift well aimed kicks at the hasps (helps if mate sits on box, mind his bollocks!)

Armies of well trained ants

Oxyacetylene cutters

Blowing on them

.....and loads a filums on UBoob:

Fer feck's sake, what are you worried about. It's a basic hasp and lock, little plates get pushed down into a level line, lock opens. All you need is something thin enough to slide in and push the plates down. The most stupid kid thief knows that. But, if I really wanted to nick your soiled grundies from your panniers I don't think I would hang around picking the lock. I would ram a half decent screwdriver (or a very basic home made jemmy) behind the hasp and give it just half decent twist / lever..... POP, BING, PING.... Thank you very much.

As suggested, try a thin bladed small screwdriver, an Acco or paper clip, something like that. You can't break it.

PS You can also open Yale locks on front doors with a credit card.

You lot do get in a tizz at times don't you? A simple question only needed a simple answer - yes or no, but thanks to everyone who contributed. Some suggestions were rather amusing to say the least!

Sticking to plan A anyway and rang the dealer this morning. Thought I could save a bit of time and running about by doing it myself but no problem just to call by with the panniers and borrow my old key to unlock them / remove the locks so I'm sorted :beerjug:

Glad you got sorted, as an aside I'll have you know Wapping I sell my soiled grollies on eBay for 40 quid a go so they're very stealable :jager

It's the windy old duffer you need to convince.

Terrified he is that armies of thieves are trawling the pages of UKGSer seeking the intimate (if very simple) details on how to open a pannier lock without a key.... Those that are not already too busy out and about with their basic jemmy , that is :D

My top box and side pannier unlocks as well. I might have to 'shave' the plastic cap a bit so it doesn't push the lock's pins as much.
