(almost) catastrophic failure

how much play is in the back wheel when it is on the centre stand?? hold the wheel at 10 oclock 6 oclock and give it a wiggle, should be no more than 1-2 mm of play.

BMW specify less than 1mm when COLD!!! ie less than 35C

Well thats interesting. Out in France last week checked FD after run and have approx 2mm of play at 12 and 6 o'clock none at 9 and 3 yet when cold have virtually nothing. So by that I would say my FD is ok, however if you felt the movement in it when hot you may well disagree. I phoned Mike at Cardiff Motorrad and he said check when hot. But to also ride to about 60 throttle off, clutch in, and lean back to see if i could hear or feel a rumble come up through the frame. I couldn't so rode it 800 miles back with no problem. Would be interested to hear from Steptoe or someone else who deals with this sort of thing, to hear their opinion.

Or even 12 o'clock and 6 ;-)

I can see what you are saying but surely if you have play when its hot its because everything is expanded so will have play, any more than 2 mm and you are right it probably will be knackered.

But then on that basis surely if you have play when cold then you will have even more play when hot so again knackered.

Just a thought

P.S done alot of searching on here about checking final drives and could not find anywhere that says to do it hot.

That's right.............. but I don't have play when cold:nenau

I suspect if you have no play or play which is very dificult to percive then everything is fine with the wheel bearings. look here

http://www.mattmccabe.com/r1200gs/r... 001 Measuring bearing play of rear wheel.pdf
if the link does not work try this page

http://www.mattmccabe.com/r1200gs/r1200gsfinaldrive/

the measurement must be done when the componets have a maximum temerature of 35C in other words better done at say normal summer temperature ~ 20 - 25C.

This does not of course mean that the final drive is not shagged though this is only to test the wheel bearings.
