Over the past couple of years I have been looking on and off for a light weight glove for off roading.

For me it had to fulfil the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Lightweight
  • Good feel
  • Withstand getting wet and muddy
  • Offer a high level of protection both off road and, more importantantly, on road when riding to the trails
  • Be suitable as an all day road glove in hotter climes

I said in no particular order but, actually, protection comes at the top of the list and I've been prepared to compromise on some of the other requirements for this, but not much.

Unfortunately I've not so far seen anything I liked the look of. The majority of 'off road' gloves do not IMO provide enough protection for road use and gloves that did were invariably too bulky.

Well, browsing in HG today I came across the Alpinestars and I think I have found (my) holy grail as far as off road gloves go.

They have some serious protection with hard armour on the knuckles and heavy leather across the back and wrist bone area. The palm is very soft, supple leather and all other areas are either suede type material or the more usual mesh you find on off road gloves.
They would appear to satisfy all my requirements and whilst not quite as light weight as a normal off road glove they are plenty light enough and without even having used them yet very comfy, like a second skin :)

The only down side is their price, £75, but hey they are there to do a job and look like they have every chance of doing that.

I'll come back later once I've used 'em and crashed in 'em a bit and let you know how they are getting on.

Anybody else use them, what do you think of 'em?

these look good. i use alpinestar octanes from fc-moto.de They are around £45 posted and are used all year around. they dry quickly, have enough protection for me, are so comfortable, and warm enough in winter as they're in muffs with heated grips. at that price, a new pair every 18 months is easily justifiable. :)

Yep they're my favourite too. I like this style of glove as my main glove, and these are the best I've used - on my third pair now I think? I use them all year round ( under muffs in winter ) and find that they'll last me about a year or so before they start to wear through at the palm. Doesn't sound great but I think it's pretty good given the amount of use they get and the type of glove they are. They're comfy, strong (I've not ripped a pair yet, or holed a finger-tip) and as you say, have good feel at the bars and good protection. Downside being they are not waterproof obviously, but ( sounds mental ) I prefer wet hands over the waterproof gloves I have tried over the years - none of which I've got on with at all.

Have to say though - the old 'GS' BM gloves are pretty good too - bit less protection though.

Pluck

PS They're faster in orange :)

gloves

they look similar to mine but mine are all leather - no mesh. They were £45 - ish 2 yrs ago. One palm wore through but I had it fixed.
I only like small lightweight gloves like these. Got rather cold/wet riding to Cornwall last Easter so fitted brush guards to the airhead - sorted
