Alt-Berg Boots. Which Type?

Got chatting to an old giffer in the local bike shop on Saturday. He was singing the praises of his Altbergs. "Had 'em for 14 years. Never let a drop of water in" Blah, Blah, Blah.

Ive read loads of praises for them on the forum, they seem to be the dogs.

Which 'model' should I choose? How much are they? Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

If you're after lace-up Altbergs, I'd go for the All Weather Bandogs as I believe they offer the greatest most protection of the lace-up boots.

Mine arrived in January, comfortable from day one, little breaking in required.

Just been checkin their website after posting the thread and I chose the all weather bandog as a first choice. Well surprised at the price. I was expecting at least £200. £150. Seems a bargain compared to BM's boots prices.

I didnt spot a gear change pad on the AWB's. Do they have one, and if not does it mark the upper boot when changing up?
 
They do a Hogg walking boot as well the bike boots have the gear change leather bit thingy on, I have two pairs the all weather Hogg for winter and the Micro Lite Hogg for summer, best money ever spent :thumb

No gear change pad but no marks either.
 
I've had a pair for about 4 years and they are bloody good boots, 100% waterproof. Can't remember the name of the style, but they have a single zip, with velcro flap over zip, and larger velcro flap that wraps around calf. They will fit inside the leg of the normal sort of waterproof fabric trousers, but will also fit outside leathers.

Personally speaking, I'd recommend the Clubman Classics. I've worn mine everywhere from several hundred mile trips in the depths of Scottish Winters to rides along Highway One during a balmy California fall...

The Roadsters are good comfy boots, have been wearing them for years. Only problem is the lack of protection on the shins. Got hit in theright shin a while ago by a small brick that had fell off a wagon going the other way and by jimminy it hurt!
 
I bought the Clubman Classic, mainly as everyone has raved about them. But a big factor is that the can be refurbished, my last all weather boots are still great boots, but they leak. Then you have to go through all the crap of finding replacements, not quite sure if they should be this tight or loose. At least I will be able to get this fixed in the distant future, PLUS OLD CHAP THEY ARE BRITISH, WHAT!!!
Bike unfortunately German, but with the amount of warrantee work on my GS1150 I have probably tripled the German national debt.
 
I think Schtum is right to say that my boots are the Clubman Roadster - the Altberg site is down so can't check to be 100% certain. I tried the Classic boots and found they ended a bit too high up my leg - just personal preference. The Roadsters have gear change patches on both boots, which is handy if you also ride old machines, as I do.

I bought my boots at the BMF show, and when trying on different pairs I found that the size of the boot round the calf jumps up between the size 8 boot and the 8.5 size. So if you have legs like tree trunks (like me ) and take about size 8, check with Altberg about the fit of the boot around the calf. I went for the 8.5, which is fine cos I tend to wear thick socks when riding.

And whats the difference...

...between the Clubman Roadsters and the Clubman Roadster Microlites? If they are a lighter boot, made with lighter materials, would this not deem them less efficient? Or am I missing the plot?

Im definate that Altberg are gonna be my next boot. Just wondereed which style will be best for allround GS riding and walking around when I get to where I wanna go. I suppose a trip up to their factory would be a good plan, see wots wot.

Bear in mind (that's an interesting picture) that there is a waiting time for supply unless you are very very (we were :D ) lucky. A visit to factory is well worthwhile, we took hours getting the right fit and all without hassle. The Hoggs have the advantage if you want to walk (as in hills etc) you can use your riding boots - image a 10 mile walk in MX boots ! Top gear, top firm, TOP price, and British, recommended ;)
 
My wife and I bought the 'Hog lights' a couple of years ago. They're very comfortable, took no breaking-in and are fine in hot and all but, the coldest of conditions. The soles on mine are knackered now but I can't decide whether to go for a new pair or get them re-soled. Altberg offer their own re-soling service.

I have a pair of the 'Clubman Roadsters' for work and they're the same high quality and again very comfortable although alot more waterproof than the Hog lights. They are the easiest boots I've had to put on and take off.

Overall I'm very pleased with their products. I sometimes think I would like a little more protection but, as fritz says, I couldn't envisage walking very far in my MX boots and to take walking boots on our trips as well, just wouldn't be practical.

We're coming over to the Leeds Lions Rally over Easter, so I may well break away up to the factory to see what they have 'in the flesh'.

Be sure to ring 'em first, not sure if they open at factory on Saturday mornings or not. There is an Altberg shop in Richmond it self where they might take the boots for you to try if you ask - if you can't get to factory when open. PS, the Hogg Lites aren't gore tex lined, but when dubbed they have kept water out so far, and the lites will be better in the hotter climes.
 
I have had a pair of the Clubman Classics for around 7 years and they're a good boot, nothing flash just a basic good boot. Honestly cant remember how water proof they've been as I have two other pairs of boots by different manufacturers and I'm forever chopping and changing.

What I will say is that the Heine Gericke Shelltex membrane boots I had on today were soaked through within 7 miles , they are shite!!

Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose mate.
