Myself and some work colleagues are on the Autozug from Dusseldorf to Verona on Friday October 7th. The trip 'leader'. has planned a nice 4 day trip home over all the tops.. Italy/Switzerland, using lots of alps touring routes from online Looks like a cracking trip...

Now that it's snowed (for the day).. I am thinking that perhaps an alternate, lower route (that still involves no vignet, staying to lower ground) home (to The Hague) from Verona would be a good idea to have as backup.

Anyone have suggestions?

We had snow on the high roads yesterday, the Grossglockner and Maltahochalmstrasse where closed. They open again tomorrow but the point is this can happen in the Alps at any time of year. In fact September/October are often months when the weather is stable. We had snow down to 1500m for a day in July this summer so it always pays to have a route planned that does not involve high roads whatever time of year you travel. Enjoy your trip, the chances are a lot of the high roads will be open but do check the weather each day before you ride. This is the advice we give throughout the season

If snow closes the higher passes then one possible backup is to take the Brenner Pass, using the motorway if you need to and then having a play on the lower altitude roads in Bavaria, Black Forest, Vosges, Ardennes etc.
