Alternative engine oil for an lc

How timely is this? Was just using the search function (yes, really!) as I was sat in my local dealer's at the weekend having a tyre changed and they also said they'd fit the fork bushings under the recall. Anyway, with extra time to kill and a bit bored, I read through bike owner's manual again - 2016 R1200GS LC - and read that an oil/filter change is due at 6000 miles. I'm just over that, so will be doing a oil/filter change this week at some point. I see the manual recommends Advantec - does anyone use this? I was going to look into getting some as the bike is still under warranty and I don't want to do anything to put that at risk. After some searching around on t'internet, I've also got some conflicting torque settings too, so I'd be grateful if someone could confirm them (manual at home now so will look again later to see if they're in there):

Drain plug - 42NM
Bash plate bolts - 8NM
Oil filter - 11NM, but I'll probably just tighten this by hand ;-)

Many thanks.

It's just as well you used the search button otherwise crocodile Dundee would have been on your case

Fred has your boomerang not come back

Your first post is a lazy leech type post without even bothering to introduce yourself etc. Your second post is this dribbling pile of shit wannabe funny remark. You don't even bother to thank the people that responded to your lazy question.

Good luck in your time in this forum and I imagine you won't be contributing much. Leeches rarely do.....

Those are the correct torques. Advantec is the Shell oil mentioned above at £60 for 4 litres.
You dealer has a supply of bushes!?

None more surprised than me. When I eventually rang them up some time after getting the letter, they said they' put my on the list as their supply was very limited and they'd contact me when they had some available, saying it'd be well into Winter before it gets done. When I turned up at the weekend they announced they'd do them there and then \0/

Thanks for confirming the torque values and oil name :-)

I've contacted my local dealer for the fork recall and I'm 120 something on the list ,not holding my breath.

just buy the correct oil same make, it will still save you shed loads over their prices

I think it may be helpful to the original poster to be clear on what alternative oils work for an LC engine, as opposed to the older air cooled which is where a lot of existing FAQ/search threads direct.

As an example, the book states 5W-40. This doesn't appear to be available at Motul 7100 which appears to 10W-40. Is the recommendation for Motul 7100 10W-40 in a LC engine or to use other Motul's? I don't know the answer to this so am unable to help but I would be interested to know if 7100 10W-40 has been tried and works successfully in the LC and reduces the engine clatter. I also run a 2010 twin cam so 1 oil for both the LC and the Aircooled has advantages.

Sticking with the recommended grade for the LC, a quick search at http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-781-5w40-motorcycle-engine-oil.aspx shows the following for my 2014 TE LC in 5W-40 Jaso MA2 - Castrol Power 1 racing is specifically mentioned in my 2013 handbook. I understand that the current BMW recommended oil is Shell

the Gulf syntrac looks very cheap at £32 for 4L

otherwise it is a choice of

Silkolene PRO 4 Plus 5w-40 Ultimate Ester Full Synthetic Bike Engine Oil £50

Motul 300V 4T Factory Line 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Race Motorcycle Engine Oil £48

or 4 x 1 of Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 5w-40 Fully Synthetic Motorcycle Engine Oil (4 x £12) - £48

I think it also may be worth reminding readers of the old FAQs that any posts recommending car engine oils refer to the older pre 2012 engine with a dry clutch. The LC, I understand has a wet clutch and hence needs m/c oil.

Hope this has been helpful in addition to previous posts/FAQs. Apologies if I have missed something obvious. I will probably opt for the Silkolene for now but am interested in the Motul clatter reducing as the engine gets more mileage on it.

I have just found the Motul 7100 available from Opie at only £40 which seems great value if it is recommended to reduce clatter.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pv-143206-motul-7100-4t-5w-40-fully-synthetic-motorcycle-engine-oil-4-litres.aspx

It doesn't show up under the search result so I have given them a quick call to check it is all OK which they have done.

The difference between the Motul 7100 & 300 is ester content racing oil - not of much interest to me as a frequent oil changer with normal road & light off road use.

Hi, Here's my opinion of my 2017 Rallye after doing 5k in as many weeks both home & Europe.
I had bike booked in for engine rattles at dealer yesterday but cancelled, since the weather has cooled down a bit the rattle has got better, my thinking is the 5w oil viscosity is a tad too thin, so I've ordered the Motul 7100 which at 10w viscosity when hot will arrive today, I'm not sure I'll change it as it's close to service interval & like I said the noise has reduced to normal now.
But when travelling Spain boy did engine rattle, ambient temp was 39c & bike was running between 80/100c which is within range & to be expected, but it must thin the oil to its limit.
Ordered from Sportsbikeshop as £39.95 & free delivery.

Threads like this make forums a shit fight to find actual useful information in the end.

I find the simple act of reading the title to a thread gives one a clue what type of shit to expect.

Never the less, I've found the Motul oil from this one..
Also don't forget not everyone is as gifted as others & may all need a little steering in the right direction.
we shall see if the slightly thicker oil quieten the noisy bloody 2017 engines.

Just ordered the oil filter from Motroworks naively expecting a OE BMW one and received a Mahle OC619 not a genuine. This would have been a few quid cheaper an more convenient to order from Opie although I did get replacement crush washers from Motorworks at the same time to save me hunting through my universal sets.
