Hi all,
When travelling on my R1250GS I fitted a Hepco and Butler rear rack to the existing rack mounting bolts and used this very happily for many years with an Ortlieb waterproof rollbag strapped down.
Wanting to have a similar set-up on the 1300, Hepco and Becker could only propose a complete rack and fitting kit which involved having more scaffolding on the rear of the bike. Not happy with this solution and associated cost, I measured up a template and got a local guy to make me up a rack that would fit onto the existing 1300 rack ( I got the rack for the vario topbox fitted at the factory).
Nigel (at Altiss Engineering - 1 Hill Ln Cl, Markfield LE67 9PY) was very professional and took accurate measurements and promptly manufactured the rack including 4 spacers to raise it above the existing vario rack, and longer bolts (M6 x 30 Flange Head T30 stainless steel).
I've attached a few photos of the rack both on and off the bike , and I've subsequently had the rack powder coated (see last attached photo) - again a local company (Mallory Industrial Coatings - Peckleton Lane Business Park, 7 Peckleton Common, Peckleton, Leicester LE9 7RN).
I'm very pleased with the result and means that I can continue to travel using panniers and the rollbag on the back. We'll be trying it out in Ireland in July, but it is extremely well made and I'm sure it will be fine.
You'll also probably notice that I've not gone for the 1300 varios and have instead gone for Touratech Evo (38l each side). When I was able to see the 1300 varios, I realised that they are oddly shaped compared with the "old" varios which would make using our existing travel pack cubes quite difficult - and I didn't need an internal light or central locking. Let's nto start up a conversation about the 1300 varios!
Anyhoo, photos attached and you can contact Nigel at Altiss Engineering on 07890 591618, or [email protected]. The cost of the rack without powder coating was £80 with postage on top - which is a brilliant price and he manufactured the rack in 2-3 weeks. The eagle-eyed amongst you may notice that the rack is secured with 4 allen key bolts - I've subsequently replaced those with the Torx T30 bolts, which are the same as the original rack bolts that you'll need to remove to fit this rack.
It was so nice to get a bit of kit for the 1300 which didn't cost a lot and means that I can continue using the travel set-up that I've been using on my various GS's for years.
If you need any further photos and if you have any questions, then just ask - otherwise contact Nigel at Altiss Engineering if you are interested.
Cheers
Tony
