I think I'm due for a new one as there's a slight whirring sound on tickover, nothing nasty, but sounds like a fan on a water cooled engine running.

Are they easy to do at home, or would the dealer be me best bet?

All other servicing and maintenence, except tappets and balancing, is done by meself. The belt sounds simple enough, but are there any hidden dangers, apt to bite my arse?

Remove cover, about 12 bolts, and replace belt do it before you put your H&B's on.

Nothing scary, just straight forward nuts & bolts, do as the manual says: its not rocket science, hey, if a mechanic can do it !!!!!!

:D :D :D

Its a piece of cake, but as Jimb says, do it before you put on the H&B bars. Its impossible to remove the plastic alternator cover with them fitted.

Remove 4 bolts holding front plastic cover & remove cover.Slacken alternator nuts x3 pull on belt to slacken tension. If fitted remove oil pipe running across belt path if fitted ( no oil will come out).remove belt.refit new belt, take up slack with aduster bolt on left side (6mm allen socket req'd) and torque to 8nM.If you haven't got a small enough torque wrench then tighten until you can nearly twist the belt through 90 degrees.Tighten nuts refit rest of bits

Tony,

You're a top bloke. I'll be in touch after next weekend, not sure whether I'm going to Land's End or for the Peaks ride out - aint made me mind up.

I'll call anyway, and nip round for a cuppa, and if a fan belt needs replacing, we can do it - got to order the thing yet.

See you soon

Jamie
