Having recently read a post here where the author suggested that his 100GS did not suffer the same level of turbulence at head height with the flyscreen removed, I decided to give it a try.
I removed the screen last night and took the motorway to work this morning. My thoughts are that there is less turbulence around the head. There is obviously more wind blast at chest height but I can live with this.
But here is the strange thing....

I think the bike handles better....more stable etc.....Have I lost the plot?:comfort

Oh and I think the bike looks better without the screen

i did the same to mine and took the big screen off and it is better

After crashing in Pakistan and loosing the screen and then riding to Goa without one, it was nice to have the uninterrupted flow if air... hot or otherwise. Bloody wet when it rained though:D

And NO, it does not look better.

I think a lot of helmets are designed to be in the airflow so probably do feel better without the screen. not too sure on a long journey though. plenty of naked bikes are popular too.

Fluffy air off the screen is the most annoying thing about my PD although not as crap as the 1200GS screen. I too have thought about removing the screen in summer but have been to slack to do it. Now it's getting cooler probably won't do it until summer.

Currently am experimenting with velcroing different shape polycarbonate sheets to the front of the screen to reduce buffeting. It seems that the problem comes from the sides of the screen and handguards and not over the top. Will post a pic when I get something that makes a significant difference.

Anyone else had success?

i have the screen adjusted just about as low as it will go - I find a blast of air in the chest preferable to turbulence round my head, but cant say Ive noticed a change to the handling.

I found the standard screen on the GSPD to be shite
I replaced it with a Wudo screen that was a lot better
I improved that even more by making some adapters so you could put the screen more upright.
For traveling i use the screen all the time because it give good wind protection

But for the more interesting off road trips i take it off because i hate looking at the ground through it

I have an ermax screen on my R100Gs and find that when I tilt it to it's lower setting I get less turbulence. I have a giant parabellum which I have never tried but I'm sure it will keep me as cosetted as an RT screen would should I ever want to go in that direction. Here it is placed over the ermax for comparison, it is huge and would probably have a significant effect on the handling. Of course your own physical height would have a bearing on how well the screen protects you but I reckon there is no ideal screen out there unless it can be adjusted ( electrically?) on the fly and that most screens will be a compromise in some way.

Yer won't get it throught the door with that big screen on :D :D

I agree that most screens are a compromise. Have owned a lot of bikes with screens -eg R80RT, Triumph Trophy 1200, 1200GS etc and all were less than perfect in regard to wind noise/buffeting but were effective at weather protection. Even the K1 with it's much vaunted wind tunnel design is only OK.

Stand up up on the pegs with my Shoei helmet on and it is whisper quite.

So the choice seems to be weather/wind protection or less helmet noise. I will keep cutting and bending polycarbonate scraps to try to find the best compromisefor me. :thumb
