called into local dealer last week before heading to work in denmark.thay have an 05 gs with 35k and full service history.
comes with tall screen,engine bars,crud catcher and bar risers. price tag is 5995 but said he woukd drop to 5600 for cash sale.
is this a fair price or should i go in and drop 5 grand cash on his desk and wait for him to buckle?
I rember an old guy saying "everything has 3 prices,what you think it costs,what the seller thinks it costs and what it really costs!"
I dont mind spending the money for a decent bike ,but like everyone else i like to keep hold of as much as possible

If you stick 5K on the table he'll probably pick it up and pass it straight back to you. He may even shove it where you wouldn't expect to find it! :beerjug:

im sure you can do much better than an 05 for that money but probably private sale, i and my mate both traded in 08gs's with 15k on clock, in his case with full luggage, i got 6800 off a 10plate gs, he got 7200 off a gsa 11 plate.look around.:flag
 
the problem with n.ireland is a shortage of bikes keeps the prices higher than rest of u.k.
I dont mind buying from mainland but travel costs reduce the savings and some sellers idea of mint leaves a lot to be desired

It'll cost you nothing to find out. And the salesman will realise you're serious. If it's not enough he'll say no. So chuck in another £100.
If he says that's still not enough, say "thanks, that's all i have, sorry it's not enough" turn around and walk out.
Bet he'll be calling you back before you reach the door. :D

+1 Cost nothing to ask. Plus a pile of money is a real offer. But BMW dealers are a funny bunch and don't always budge even a pound even when they are neck deep in unsold stock.

If this one doesn't work out there are plenty around. Try a Triumph dealer. My local one had 3 1200GS (05 - 06) and a 61 plate GSA with 75 miles on it last week. He sold the GS's as a job lot to a dealer in Scotland since they weren't moving. He would have definitely taken a cash deal. BMW dealers aren't the best place to by an early 1200GS right now.

Actually previous poster has a point. I was in the Philip McCallum's in Lisburn a while ago and he had 3 GSs in stock.
 
Bear in mind that it's quarter end NOW. If he's well behind on his sales numbers you might get lucky so go for it - the worst he can say it no and then you commence a negotiation. Next week is Q3 - new sales target apply.

The other thing is if you can't get him to move on absolute price play with 'funny money' that's stuff that he might be able to put into the deal from a different budget. Maybe some gear/equipment or a free off road riding course etc. You know how much money you have in your pocket and after that it's up but if you can get the bike plus some 'funny money' it might swing the deal and on his books it's coming out of different budget lines so is less of a big hit for him. Remember a pair of gloves which we have to pay £85 for probably only cost the dealer £45 or 50 so his cost of the give away is a lot less that it would cost you to buy.
 
I bought an 08 R1200GS with full BMW service history, full luggage and 21000 miles last week for £6500, it was a private sale but I think you can get it for £5000:thumb
