I think it`s bottom left actually `photosensor for instrument lighting` but also does the automatic DRL to headlight switch , but yeah, glad you found it. That`s where i was aiming my torch, anyway...
I had to do exactly the same thing when i got my GSA (play around with a torch in the garage) because the way the lights operated was not clear.
It doesn`t help that there is no tell-tale light to tell you that the headlights are on - most cars/bikes have a green one you show that the headlights are on and another (blue) to show main beam, on the GS you`ve just got to accept that if the (green!) DRL indicator is not lit then your headlight should be on..

On cars there might be a green light that indicates that the headlights are on.
On a car you have the option of swithing the headlights off, On a MC this is not an option.
Start the engine, and the headlights either turns on, or if they fail, you get a warning light. And if the bike is equipped with DRLs, an indicator light will show if the DRLs are active. If no DRL on, the headlights are on when the engine runs. No need for an indicator for this, as there is no option to turn them off....

^^^^^^Yes, but this was the first bike i`ve owned where there is no option to turn lights on/off manually, i know - i`m late to the auto-headlights-on motorcycle party, and in some ways i prefer to have control of that kind of stuff myself as you can`t always trust electronic wizardry that is supposed to do stuff automatically.

I haven`t, i don`t know when the tail lamp is supposed to be on or the two red indicator `marker lights`. Feck it, i`ll just have to assume BMW know what they`re doing and that they`re lit when they`re supposed to be..

The tail light is now just a brake light. The indicators are three way, indicators, tail lights and finally brake lights.
Well, maybe BMW don`t know what they`re doing then because those two dim, weedy LED`s in the indicators that now function as a tail light are bloody useless..
there is a combination set of button presses to turn of the Lights off, on the air cooled bikes
Turning the Headlight OFF
Turn the ignition on and allow the startup-check cycle.
Hold turn-signal cancel switch for 4-5 secs.
Hold right turn-signal switch for 4-5 secs.
Start engine.
Lights should remain OFF. It will reset with key on off cycle
To turn ON the Lights whilst riding operate the high beam switch
You can also toggle round this mode whilst riding. Its also an option within the motoscan app to enable OFF all the time.
and the latest GS911 update, allows a workshop mode to simulate you have started the bike, so stuff like lights and heated grips come to life (obviously needs battery support, or it will die fast)

My 2020 gs has the older type single rear light and standard indicators.
I do have the denali number plate brake light that the canbus controller makes flash though , which i like.
Sounds like you need to get your checked. Mine are as bright as the old system. Great improvement having the main now come on as a brake light.
Quite agree the new system works perfectly and when my fellow riders are behind they think they look good no problems discerning between the use of each mode.

I wish I had "DRL only" X-stripe lit in my headlight during a day and High Beam during a night only. But, as I ordered base model 1250 (2021 model) it arrived with High Beam always on and X-stripe lit just a shy bit, almost invisible. I wasn't expecting that and when I questioned the dealer 10 months ago, they said that's the way it was and if I'd ordered adaptive headlight option it would come with DRL functioning. Ridiculous, from my point of view. The bike has Ambient Light Sensor and I use it to drive my Hex EzCan so my Aux Lights can dim at night not to leave anybody blind coming the oposite way.

Mine has been coded at the dealer but I had to buy the left hand side switch module. That was their condition to code it.
