looking to upgrade my CPU from my current Athlon XP1800 (1500GHz)

How does the new Sempron chips compare to the Athlons

semprons are mostly built on older "thunderbird" core as used in old generation athlons. they are good chips, but slightly limited by 256 kb L1 cache.

i think the sempron 3000 is based on better "barton" core with 512 kb cache.

probably not notice the difference. i have one pc with athlon 2000xp "palamino" chip like your 1800 & another with "barton" 2500xp [identical to sempron 3000] & there's not that much in it really.

athlons get hot. cheap coolers make a lot of noise. make sure any cooler you get is rated for new chip, old one probably isn't.

I may have an Athlon processor (2400 I think) that you could have, gratis if it suits.

I upgraded an 1800 Palamino first to 2400 and then 2600 because I had a problem with the motherboard (that wasn't a problem, just the dealer feeding me cr*p). So I ended up with a spare chip.

I'm not sure if I've still got it. Will check when I get home.
