AMD Phenom Quad Core Prosessor

OK Tech Guys, please be gentle with me but I need some help. The machine that I'm currently using is now 9 years old P4 2 gig 512 Ram Win XP Pro and is an Evesham. Just recently all sorts of lock ups and hesitating when switching between web site and opening other windows etc, general multi-tasking. I have a 17" Good quality monitor, so was looking to upgrade to something new, my laptop has Vista and it seems OK but I have used XP for so long it seems like a friend. PC World have a base unit with the above processor 1.8GHz (2Mb cache) 2Gb Memory 320Gb HDD ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics card and it is reduced by £100. How much difference would I notice? Is Vista Home Premium stable? Would it be a good buy? Alternativley do any of our members supply machines either from stock or built to order?

Have a look on the Novatech site for comparison. A branch local to me but very competitive pricing, used them myself a lot over the years. Mail order etc.
