I've got the chance of a right off GS (V reg, yellow 30,000 miles) with what is described as light front, light off side and steering damage. From the pictures, it looks like the forks may be bent (but not clear), the off side header pipe is damaged, and the beak seems to be in a lower position than it should be.
Does anyone regognise the bike from my description?
Do you think it's a worth while project?
Any input would be welcome.

GS £1500

If you don't buy it,I would like to,But sounds like it's tooo cheap for the little damage you discribe. What catagory is it? has it been listed?I have most of the bits to put it right.Andy

GS

It could also be a nightmare to insure if it has been listed, you might need to obtain engineers reports etc etc to prove it's safe to go back on the road££££££££££.A mate had this trouble when he stacked his 1150 after he brought it back from the insurance company it was the bike from HELL to get cover for, then he could only get TPFT.Do a few phone calls first to see if you can get cover
for it,but this all depends on what catagory it is of course.Andy

Andy,
It's a cat D with no V5 but has the keys.
I am concerned that the damage to the header pipe might mean that the engine block could be broken.
I don't have time to view it & thought I might take a gamble.
Would it be worth buying for spares?
It will be sold by mid day tommorow.
The price is not £1500, bu I thought I might be able to get it for that.

Mike.

No way buy it without seeing it,if it has had a heavy frontal there could be whole pot of worms to be uncovered, broken top headstock/cracked engine casings.Just couple of things come to mind, and you can't buy one of those with frame numbers stamped on it, they come blank,it's all red tape I'm affraid to get that sorted, but then again it all might be ok.like all pictures they just don't show the little things that could turn what you thought was a bargain into a bottomless money pit.NEVER BUY without viewing.Where are the pics, can you show us?

From what i can see

OK from what i can see on it..

Forks are dead..: Head bearins.. possibly too.
Cannot see if head stock is bent, if it is,,, forget it.

Header pipes are dead.. Front wheel appears to have gone back into it.. Engine blocks/tops look scathed.. valve damage a possibility, internal chains too?

Wheels, look oK.. but would need checking.
Tanks is dented and scratched, looks nast, may be punctured.
The forks have come forward, whic is why beak looks low..
LOW RIDER STyle GS.. anyone?? ;)

Its dead...

I prices up a repair to a GS from Cheshire Salvage,, and in the end, i decided it was simply not worth the cash, time or effort.

Unless you are a gifted bike tinkerer, with plenty of time and money to route our spares for it.. i would give it a miss and put the £1500 toward a on the road one..

And the insurance issue could be a real trap....

If its a cat D or C you'll have no trouble registering it, and its unlikely to have major engine damage, Cat A,B are sold as spares only, not allowed back onto road. Frame headstock without numbers is not a problem if bought from the factory ( main dealer). You'd be very lucky to get it for £1500, £2500 maybe, i've seen slightly damaged GS's go for £5k, still a cat D write off, which means you won't be able to ever P/X it ay a main dealer. But as Andy says, there's always more damage than you can see.

GS

As long as the top mounting for the wishbone is ok it would be piece of p**S put this back on the road.I have wheels/forks/wishbone already a new head stock is £160 from dealer, but I am not in the motor trade so I can't bid B*****KS,I wanted to make an off roader aswell :tears.Andy

GS

It was £2900 with ten minutes to go,don't know what it went for.Not so much of a bargain after all!!.Andy

For what its worth, I have just priced up the lower fork leg for my GS 1150,£560 a pair 10 weeks back order. hope this helps
