I quite like watching cycle racing on the TV. I know nothing about it (other than it's hard and they probably cheat) but it does give you a good look at the local scenery if nothing else.

Today they are showing the Tour of Flanders, which I think is one of the 'Classic' road races. Some of the narrow and cobbled roads through the countryside look quite fun.

I thought about a long weekend jaunt. Go over on the Friday, stay in Bruges. Ride the route on the Saturday. Stay somewhere on Saturday night, take a leisurely ride back to Calais and home on the Sunday or Monday.

I can probably cobble (ho-ho) the route of the Tour together reasonably well, using assorted websites and bits of information.

Date? I really don't know.... watch this space. If the weather looks settled for a bit we could go anytime, I guess.

Some of the roads are very narrow (there was a big crash in the peloton just now) so I think we should limit it to say six bikes.

This might be OK, too:

I'd be keen

dependent on dates, May isn't good for me but otherwise shouldn't be a problem Mr W.

Looks good! I'd be interested too depending on dates:thumb

Hi Richard,

Keen on this one as well, depending on dates. I was thinking the same thing about some of those cobbled roads, and I do love Flanders. I would heartily recommend Gent as a great place to stay for the night after doing the route. A real gem of a city, and less of a museum / theme park than Bruges feels. Some good bars in both cities though.

A few photos below from my recent weekend trundle to Gent...

I quite fancy this (after my recent trip to France and Belgium) so (again) depending on dates (I need to give work some notice) then I'm up for it :thumby:

Would one of the bank holiday weekends be suitable, or too expensive for train and hotels??

Thanks for the tips, Monty.

Yeah this looks good Richard, keep me in mind. You up for this Ian?

Happy to have you along. I think from another thread that Ian's motorcycling days have come to an end. I dropped him a PM but no news.

The only bank holiday left to me now is maybe the one in August. The only thing that might go up is the price of the Chunnel, I guess.

It's not that far from Calais, so I could probably do it at the drop of a hat. Just decide to go; though adding in a day to mooch about off the bike might be an idea.

Watch this space.

Richard

Never done one of your wanders, but heard many good things about them!!!

Depending on the dates you select, pop me on your list.......:D

Ummmmmmm ??

I might be washing my hair? But if I'm not ..... it's a maybe ....

(Bouncer won't be washing his hair ..... :P)

I've done the course (Sportive - full fat version) 3x on the road bike. I really love Flanders and Bruges is fantastic base .

All the fun starts with the climbs and the cobbles however they can get a little greasy in the wet. Hopefully they will be somewhat easier for you guys.
