this is my first ever water cooled bmw ,i have just bought a r1200gs lc a 2013 full dealer history but last service done at jordon bikes in leeds,it has 17500 miles on it.in the past i have probs had just about every incarnation of gs,s ever made, but this is my first ever lc
anyway the book says ,i repeat the book say 5w/40 fully synthetic .
but in all the boxers i have ever had this engine is the noisyest ,not exhaust noise but engine noise .or are they just like that.:nenau
has anybody tried a heavier oil to quieten things down a tad.
yes i know it has a wet clutch and 20/50 is probs out of the question
what do you think :popcorn

If the engine is noisy... it may be valve clearances are out... or cam chain is loose... or oil needs changing... or oil needs topping up... or your ears need to settle that it's all just normal.

They're very noisy engines. I start my 2017 it rattles away, just like the 2015 before it did. Mate starts his 100K mile 1150GS, a brief rattle then it settles down into a gentle whirring, no tapping nor nuffink.

Get better ear plugs.

PS, a lot of the tapping you can hear is the injectors, not the valve gear. Clutch rattles a bit at tickover - pull the clutch in and see how it stops.

they do sound shit in comparison with a TU for example... when I got mine it felt so cheap and lightweight against my twin cam... i was expecting it to implode within 10K or so... still sounds the same today as it did then... thats how they are... putting thicker oil in may work, but your putting weight on the pump etc for no good reason... try a grade up see what it does....

ok lads many thanks ,it not just mine then ,yes my old 1100,1150 and my hexhead and twin cam were quiet in comparison :thumb2
