Here's a bike that somehow doesn't stand up to scrutiny........

Anyone know it?

Perhaps because they were only made to 76/77, and that was first registered in 1980

The second one has been in Mikeyboy's hands. Another good reason to prefer it!

so that makes my black one wrong too .
No. That's M suffix and would make it a very early 90s. That might explain the odd rear hub too. /5 series bikes had that cover fitted but not the later /6 bikes. The bike will probably have the earlier/5 switch gear which early 90S bikes had too.

i'm thick , tell me what's wrong ?
The registration date is a bit weird (as already stated) but sometimes things do hang around, but the rear light is a post-81 variety. The timing cover is post-81, and has been ground down. The clocks are the wrong colour (green numbers) and the rev counter is electronic. The front wheel axle is sticking out a bit more than it should on RHS. The oil cooler is a bit unusual (but not really unwelcome). There's a stripe on the rear mudguard (which will give the rivet-counters a big heart attack) which is a personal preference after a respray but not standard/original. There's no cross-pipe for the fuel supply. The exhaust nuts are not /6 (but who cares?). All in all a lot of irregularities which point toward it not being an R90S. IMHO.

The Silver Smoke one, on the other hand, looks quite nice, I agree, but not th subject of this thread and not my favourite colour! :)

M is 1974 when it is at the end, 1995 when at the front. This one is the former. The 'odd rear hub' is just a bit of trim and can be fitted across the /5 and /6 range (and later if wire spoked). The 'earlier /5 switch gear' looks the same but the /6 bikes (and this probably included) have different wiring in a minor but important way.

It should also have a smooth case gearbox ,and the handle bar clamps are not 90s

Looking at the two R90’s and the blue 100’s Im struck by the disparity in prices. I know if I was to invest , it would be through this forum and as suggested above, one that Mikey boy had laid his hands on

I had a “customer “ desperate to buy a 90 S as an investment piece,
He had the 1st one shipped to me from Germany or Austria,
Anyways,it was a black/silver mk 1,very early one ,,,but non matching numbers.
Close, but no cigar.(personally I think a deal could have been done,I’d have bought it and sold it)
It went back to Europe.
The second one was a Daytona orange mk 2 ,it arrived iirc from Sweden..
Nice, but,it had been crashed at some point and had a bent frame.
This bike was sold on in the U.K.,
I think someone off this forum bought it.
So I guess this fella had spent best part of £2k moving these bikes,if he had just been patient he could have had the pick of 3 one owner matching number bikes with provenance,
If you want to buy a classic bike you really do need to do your research,or find someone who knows what they are looking at.
