Anakee 3 or Anakee Adventure tyres?

Question for those that have run both. (No discussion about other brands please - it’s confusing enough).

Been happy with the 3’s on the GSA and with 7000 miles on the back tyre and at times 2 up and in sunny climes I think not bad! But, now is the time for new tyres.

I use them mostly 90/10 on-road/off-road with worst case scenario gravel tracks.

I understand the Adventure tyre is more 80/20 and the OEM for new GS’s but I’ve also heard it really is a 70/30.

So can someone who has experience of both please give me the pros and cons. Should I stick with the 3’s or will the newer Adventure be the right direction with little in it and the new technology worth it?

I have just changed (1000 miles ago) from the 3s to the adventure on my 2018 GSA.
I was.more than happy with all aspects of the 3s. I also got 7000 miles out of mine. It took a little to get used to the way the new tyres tipped into corners but after a few miles they give me the same confidence the 3s did (my 3s were very square in the end).
Not really tested them in the rain yet. I ride the same on / off road split as you do and found them fine in a limestone quarry. Again not been out on mud yet.
I would have stuck with the 3s but my dealers could not get them. But I'm equally happy with the adventure as I haven't really noticed any difference.
Not gone 2 up so I can't help with that aspect.

Appreciate the feedback Aggers. I heard from one tyre fitter who could not get the rear 170/60 R17 Anakee 3 but my dealer can so it’s all to play for. Good to hear you are just as happy with the Adventures.

I’ve used the adventures now for a year 17 GSA. Don’t do huge miles a year but as Aggers said. I got 6000 out of the 3”s and the rear was very squared off by that point. I live at the end of a long farm gravel Forrest type track. For me the adventures are a good compromise fir the riding I do. They’re less noisy (to me) than the 3”s. But the first couple of rides the adventures did feel different into corners. Not hugely unsettling but different. I’ve done 2500 miles and they’re in great shape still. You’ll hear lots of varying opinions and they’re just that, as are mine. Ride Mag did a comparison last year I think.

Thanks Gezaware. I’ve read and watched much of what has been published and cannot find a direct comparison. I think Michelin believe their 3’s are too close to their road tyre offering and so have positioned the Adventure’s in the middle thus consolidating the range. Interesting about the cornering though. They are supposed to be a neutral tyre - whatever that means.

Two responses in 24hrs on a tyre thread should tell you popularity of these tyres. Look elswhere. Stay with Michelin if you want to, pretty much any road tyre will work on gravel you need to go to at least a 50/50 tyre to notice the difference.

Could be so, but in my experience something bad usually results in the largest number of responses. I’d have expected a tyre bonfire at least

That's already been done during the previous 7 years if you search back on the anakee III, they are not a bad tyre but things have moved on, better mileage, more feel etc. However they are cheap, wonder why?

The Anakee Adventure is a direct replacement for the Anakee3. Bennetts and a couple others have done reviews of the AA that suggests it is a good/better tyre than A3. New compound (no doubt more silica rich), new carcass, etc. Looking at pics, the grooves get bigger at the edges... so better for off-road, but not so for tarmac. It’s a very stylish tyre and probably suited well to typical GS touring that is steady and varied. Depends on what you demand out of a tyre. I’d be tempted to give them a try, but my preference is for tyres biased towards road performance - which the AAs are not.

I loved the adventures non my old hex head, they're as good on the road than the 3s and less noisy. Extremely confident and had no issues in my European trip scrapping pegs in mountain passes, Autobahn and a few easy off-road bits...

All while 2 up and fully loaded with 3 panniers.

Can't wait to wear off the 3s on my "new to me" wethead and go back to the adventures.

If you do 90/10 or 80/20, it'll be a perfect tyre for you.

More off-road, you'll need another tyre... Weak point is anything wet off-road (mud, wet grass, etc).

I had annakee 3 on my GS1200, and did not like the feel...just gone for Conti TrailAttack3 and they are sooo much more confidence-inspiring, and quiet.
I have Annakee 3 on the GS 800 twin, and they really suit that bike well...excellent!

Tyres are such a personal choice. Is there are really bad tyre these days?
I have a mate who is very happy on Annakees - I hate the damn things!

I hated the OE Adventure's on my 1250. I had some very scary slides on them, including a couple from the front end I've never experience such poor grip on the other tyres I've used on a GS e.g. Trail Attack 2, Tourance Next, Pilot Road 4 and my current Trail Attack 3's.

I know some folk seem to like the Adventure's, but I'm not alone in having concerns about their grip on dry and wet roads. I can't compare them to other 80/20 or 70/30 tyres though as I prefer a more road orientated tyre.

In the end it came down to the Adventure or Conti Trail Attack 3. I opted for the Conti and think it will serve me well for worst case fire trails. Bike booked in on Wednesday as the rear is now losing air after my repair last year with sticky string but it held and got me to the 7000 miles point.
