Before we went away on holiday I had my engine cut out on the motorway and thought I had diagnosed a intermittently faulty side stand switch. After being away for 5 days I've come back and it won't start. It started/cutout and will not start again. Battery is 12.4 volts and I've put it on charge although I doubt that is the problem. Any guidance on other possible causes would be appreciated as the main dealer has no space until the 18th apparently.

Would that be a model affected by the faulty fuel pump controller? JJH

Have you not got AA or RAC At Home breakdown cover?

I have breakdown recovery with my insurance but they will not diagnose anything other than the basics on a bike. Then I am back to square one as they will want to know which garage to take it to.

If it was the fuel pump controller it would turn over but not fire. This isn't even turning over.

Will it turn with the clutch in? I'd be looking at the side stand switch again too. JJH

I can hear the clutch switch making but it still will not turn over. I'll give the charger a chance to put some into the battery and then go and try again.

I assume, after fettling the side stand switch, it was working ok?
I too would be looking at your repair on the side stand switch. Make sure there's not something adrift.

I'm ready to set fire to it and leave it in the garage. I'll call the dealers in the morning and see what can be done.

Give the starter motor a few taps with your heel before trying. Corrosion on the connector of the starter motor's Canbus connecting wire can be an issue. If it works dowse the outside of the starter motor with WD40 and/or replace connector.

Thanks for the heads up but it was collected this morning and off on its way to the dealer.

Let us know what the final analysis of the problem was and also the necessary fix.

The clutch switch could still be the issue even if you're hearing the click - I had just such a failure and the switch still clicks. I appreciate it's too late now but for future reference the front brake switch is the same so they could be swapped to make sure.

The starter and ignition are controlled by clutch, gear lever and side stand. It's not uncommon to have the clutch switch fail to connect so the bike will start only in neutral. If that coincides with a stand or gear position issue the bike will never start.

There is also the engine main earth lug down by the alternator.

Try checking the starter relay, situated in the tool tray, the wires can corrode and fail which gives the symptom of not turning over that you describe.

Initial response back from the dealers is a failed coil pack shorting out and another heavily corroded but ok.

My black coils looked fine and checked-out with a multimeter. but both were shot. One failed so I went to get a replacement. The other coil packed up on my journey home from the dealer. If they smell electrically hot they are dead.

If you have the old black coils you should change both for the newer stainless case type.

When one coil fails the other will be along very soon. They break down when hot, so simply testing with a multimeter wont tell you much.

The next part is whether they are covered on warranty? The BMW booklet says that HT leads are excluded but no mention of coil-packs.
