And the next adventure for the buggered old geezer and carer!

The Bernina Express is brilliant. Very jealous of your trip, looks epic
Did you organise each leg yourself? Would like to do something like this with my wife at some stage in the future.

Yes I organised it all myself.
The website 'the man in seat61' was of great help...hints on how to get the best deals, seat plans etc. I wake up early and spend a quiet hour or so planning. I like travelling but hate airports so the train is great. I'm keen on trains anyway....my dad was an old fashioned railwayman, but this is a great way of having a great holiday.
I would far rather be touring on my bike...we got as far as Lake Garda last year, but commonsense makes that less sensible at my age!
If you want a hand shout up.

Into the panorama cars...huge windows and set for off.
The lovely folk in the Hotel St Josef, on learning of our early start had produced piece bags in lieu of breakfast...very welcome too! Absolutely first class hotel if you are ever in Zurich centre.1000003384.jpg

Through and over the Alps, every turn a new view. We go up through alpine meadows....even saw a touch of frost on one shady bit...and evermore mountainous scenery...1000003383.jpg1000003405.jpg1000003392.jpg1000003404.jpg1000003407.jpg

And on through the watershed...one side draining into the Inn, Danube and Black Sea the other side into the Po and Adriatic.1000003426.jpg1000003427.jpg

And into Tirano, off the little train onto its grown up brother Trenitalia for the run into Milan.
The train runs alongside Loch Como through Varenna...last year we took the bikes over the loch to Varenna and thence to Garda.
The train goes right past the Moto Guzzi factory which I spotted too late to photo...sorry Guzzi fans!

And on into a very warm and busy Milan. Very impressive station!
After refreshing at the hotel we took to the streets and found a lovely little Osteria...lots of locals and reserved labels, but they squeezed us in and we fed well...1000003444.jpg

Carbonara for me and lasagne for Cherry.
I regard myself as something of a connoisseur of carbonara, and this one was nearly as good as my own.
A great day...difficult to do the scenery justice with a phone through a train window....you need to see it for yourself
