Hi,

Has anyone bought an anlasser starter motor to use on their r1150gs?
What are your thoughts on them?
My starter is making funny noises and i would prefer to replace and then repair the exiating and keep as a spare.

Thanks in advance

Garry

Yes.

It was crap.
I've posted about it before and put up some pics to show how poorly made it was....thin castings etc

Mine failed within 4 days of actual use.

To get you out of schit if you can't afford a pukka one, it's cheap, but it's cheap for a reason.

Others have had more success though, so it's your call........next time I need one, I'll get original grade if I can afford it, or a recon one or even a second hand OEM from Motorworks before I go for another pattern one.

Yes - No Problems

Yes bought one about 8 weeks ago. No problems so far - in Croatia at moment. Posted a link to the one I bought - do a search. No idea about durability but several tossers have had good results - and the price is great!

Just ordered one of the ones Grizzly posted the link for......thanks for the replies guys.
Just need to decide on a replacement battery now.........anyone got any recommendations?...?

Battery

I'll throw my bit in here as well! I have an Odyssey battery fitted now and it's performed faultless. However I have a couple of other bikes and I've fitted them with Motobatt batteries and these use the same technology as the Odyssey but can be found online on ebay etc for a better price.
Why are you asking about a battery? Is any battery problem not connected to the starter fault? - or is the starter problem connected to a duff battery?

Cheers......Grizzly:beerjug:

The battery is getting old but performs well and isn't connected with the starter motor fault.
I would prefer to fit a new battery along with the starter so I know everything is A1.

UPDATE

Well i fitted a Motobatt battery and one of the starter motors Grizzly recommended from the ebay seller in germany and all i can say is.....wow.
The bike fires over much quicker and starting is now instant.

Thanks for the link and recommendation Grizzly!:beerjug:

I fitted one of these starter motors this morning. Easy enough job. I ordered the starter on Tuesday, it was with me by Thursday, which I thought was pretty good from Germany. Quality looks to be OK, on a par with Valeo. The starter cog wheel pinion thingy is deeper than the Valeo one. Will see how it lasts. If it does as much service as the original (96,000 miles) I'll be well chuffed.

A word of warning to others...

So I bought one of these these last week...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181173417290

You'll see from the description it's supposedly a 'new' item.

However, it's stamped 'Valeo' and has a sticker on it saying 'remanufactured in Germany' so It's clearly a refurbished starter motor, not a new one.

Bottom line is it doesn't work.

I fit it today and when I tried it I heard a horrible grinding, like it was spinning against (and not engaging with) the flywheel. Tried it again and heard the motor spinning but again did not engage.

I refit my stock one and it started fine (though reluctantly... hence me wanting to replace it)

Swapped it for the new one again and again no joy - I marked the flywheel with a dot to be sure it wasn't moving.

Old starter on again, and again it worked.... so I've not installed it wrong (though it's so simple that'd take some doing... even for me!)

I've sent the seller an email - we'll see what happens.

Have you taken your 'old' one apart to look at the brushes?

I think it was Greg (Representing Sinn Fein) Masters who posted the thread (sorry to whomever it was if not) but there's a detailed, picture by picture thread in the font of all wisdom section that sounds like it might well suit your problem :)

Yep gonna take the stock one apart and clean it up.

Credit due to the seller of the one I bought though - they offered a replacement or refund, so I may well have just got a duff one. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'll take a refund though.

Might try the one everyone else bought if my 'refurb' goes tits up!
