Hi all
Heading for the Alps, from Ireland on Wednesday. First 2 days will be the most direct route possible.

Day 3 will see us start out in Annecy with final destination that evening in San Marino / Rimini, Italy.

Current plan is Annecy to Susa (Italy) via some Alpine passes, then a more direct route on to Rimini, but I would love to hear from anyone who can suggest and exact route (either along those lines or completely different).

We'll have 3 full days to ride back from Rimini to Cherbourg so any suggested routes for this woudl be great too....

All suggestions gratefully received.... :thumb2

Not much experience of Italy, I'm afraid, but one option for the French section is the Route des Grandes Alpes which will take you all the way in France from Geneva to the Med coast. Link HERE. The pass from Sospel (just inland from Nice) into Italy - the Col de Tende - is a stunner too.

Leaving Annecy, I'd recommend the Eastern route, taking Col de la Forclaz (great view over the lake) down towards Albertville. The Col du Frene is an option to get to Alberville, but it's nog really a stunning road, and you don't have time on your side.
From Albertville take the N90 and then take the Col de la Madeleine, a great road. Going down the other side brings you in the valley which leads to the Fréjus tunnel, but I'd go straight ahead and take the Col du Mont Cenis, a really great road with a great view over the lake, just hope for good weather.
Going down brings you into Susa.

From there on I'm afraid it'll be motorway for the rest of the day, since it's still a great distance you want to cover. The good part is that the motorway is almost a straight line to Rimini.

It would've been better if you could do it in two or three days, but in one day, this is allready pushing it.

Enjoy the ride anyway ;)

Grtz, Philip!

Thanks for the advice.

We ended up taking the eastern side of the lake from Annecy, then on to Flumet (the not so direct route), Col de Iseran (sp?), Val d'Iseire, Bourg St Maurice, Susa and then a direct motorway run to Rimini.

Set out at 8am arrive in Rimini at 1am the next day. What a day in the saddle!!
