I've remembered a few other things too.

I wasn't sure whether I felt a fraud, an imposter, a trespasser or just that I'd bothered to be there.

After taking a wrong turn in finding the Scottish memorial, I decided to take a short cut across the edge of a field.

The French farmer came racing across in his Renault van leaving a cloud of dust.
He wound his window down, his tanned face beaming, "thank you, merci, merci" as he vigorously shook my hand before driving off.

A whole community was still grateful for the sacrifice others had made so long ago.
Moments like that, should have been witnessed by all those young men who lay nearby. Perhaps they are.

A great feature of this GPS is the ability to set it to minor roads only

Messines Ridge.

It's very easy to say the wrong thing about the whole information centre with it's patriotic message that comes across.

Perhaps it would be better to just tell the story and assume folk can make their own conclusions, I don't know:nenau

I was.... still am, very naive and ill informed regarding WW1 but the shear number of dead, how and where they died is a lasting impression for us all, but 'why' in such numbers is something I'm struggling to get my head around.

It's almost impossible to see the individual among the many.
Almost.

I remember being there a while back and being transfixed by a grave that said (something like) 'Unknown Australian soldier aged 18'

It stopped me in my tracks and almost brought a tear to my eye. Here is some kid, who had a mum and a dad, maybe brothers and sisters, and he's lying in desperate solitude in cold Somme clay, buried the other side of the world from his home, and we don't even know who he is (and more to the point, his family will never know where he is ..).

All very sobering ....
