Correct me if I'm wrong but in order to preserve your warranty don't you have to get all servicing done by BMW (or a certified garage)? I like to do my own servicing and loathe the thought of paying through the arsehole for routine servicing.

Cool, is it in the small print of the warranty somewhere then, how do you know? I'm sincerely interested as I'm looking to buy a spanker GSA LC in the next few weeks and would like to service it myself so it would be good to know and see it in writing. Never bought brand new before; never even owned a bike still in warranty - my F800GS and my GTR1400 were just out of their warranty when I got them.

Generally speaking I seem to recall that as long as it's serviced to the manufacturer's recommendations by a professional then the warranty remains in force - there's an EU regulation to that effect somewhere, not sure if DIY would be good enough. Where you might lose out is on any goodwill repairs.

Extended warranties are different as they are insurance policies rather than a true warranty.

That's also my understanding with the addition that you must use genuine parts and recommend oils and such like JJH
