Dropped in at Bahnstormers and asked about service "rules", Paul was very helpfull and I have been told there is definately both an annual and every 6k service and just because my bike had a 6k one did not mean it had the annual one.
I have also discovered no "service history" when going through bundle of paperwork, the book is stamped, but no service sheets, it has only had 3, one at 600 miles (supplying dealer) and the next two at Cotswold.
Last April it had an Annual service at just 3.5k as it was a year since previous (1st) service, and just before I bought it a 6k service (without annual) hence it is due an annual in April.
I called Cotswold again to ask for service sheets, they did not say they would send them and in fact seemed put out I was asking and seemed to think as the book as stamped I did not need the full documentation. At the end of the day a stamp is just that, means nothing and I know of people who have "bribed" staff in dealers to bang a false history in a book, sure that is not the case here, so why so difficult to just post a copy of the service sheet to me? Also what was done, a stamp does not indicate what parts / fluids were, or were not replaced.
So once again I am awaiting a call-back, I also asked them about annual service and they tell me it just a check of fluids and stuff.
This is where I still do not like the BMW system, are they suggesting at the 6k service they neglected to check the bike properly and that is BMW practice, also this "check" is £140 - what to make sure the oil and brake fluid ain't low and kick the tyres?
I can understand an "annual" as in if the bike has not had a service for 12 months as per most cars / bikes, but having both and not an "either or" policy seems prety crap. I suppose they would argue it keeps services in line with mileages, which I do like, my bike was done at 3.5k, so if this was the "6k" service the "12k" service would be due at 9.5k, or would it be another 6k one with the 12k one still due? I suppose what really sucks is the prices, if it was £50 for a yearly check + whatever is needed it would be fairer. Also it would make sense to always do the annual at the proper mileage (6k,12k etc) to try and keep bikes in line. Had Costswold got the facts straight and explained this clearly I would have haggled for the yearly to be done and certainly been prepared to meet a reasonable cost to save needing the one in April.
Anyway, Paul tells me I can get them back in line by having the annual done at the same time as the 12k and then as long as I am doing about 6k a year I can keep them aligned quite easily.
I have also been informed the FD is covered by the warranty, in which case I will probably continue with that each year for peace of mind, espcially having a £400+ bill for the car alternator this week, it does not take much to get your £300 back and if nothing goes wrong then happy days!
Never take extended warranties on TV's and stuff as I just put £100 a month away to replace any such items, and they normally last beyond the 3 year extension and blow up in the 4th / 5th, but with this bike there does appear to be some relatively common faults that can cost a lot of dosh so probably worth paying for, just a shame it does mean you have to go to franchised dealer.
And it is correct that they cannot see the service history from other dealers, only details of any recall work carried out / due.
Thanks to Paul for taking time out to explain all this and I am sure I will be back there for service work in future.
