I just was flicking through my manual and noticed despite picking it up last week with 6073 miles and it being serviced by the dealer in preperation I have discovered it needs a service in April!

When I bought it I was told I would need a service at 12,000 miles / 12 months, however it now appears it needs a service after six months despite the fact it will have only done about 1,000 miles by April.

I am not at all happy, it seems BMW dealers dream up services as it suits them, as I have a warranty I will have no choice but to pay up or lose the warranty.

Once again I am a bit dissapointed with the bloody BMW rip off BS and with Cotswold Motorad for lying to me whilst doing the deal.

Does everyone have their bike serviced twice a year, even if only doing a handful of miles over the winter?

There is an annual service for those poor souls who can't manage 6k a year. It's a good system IMHO because if you are a low mileage type, it triggers you to get the beast in at least once a year.

BNW aren't lying to you but I suspect they didn't explain it properly.

I suspect the bike has just been serviced by your friendly dealer and I imagine you are a + 6k a year rider so don't worry until you are approaching 12k

It was Serviced on the 27/09/2010 at 6079 miles - i.e. a few weeks back, it states in the book that it is due on 29/04/2011 or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I tried to query this with Cotswold, but the sales chap could not tell me and said someone would call back - guess what, no call.

I phoned Bahnstormer who tell me it will need an "annual Service" and based on the age of the bike this will be an oil and filter change, despite it just having had an oil and filter and it will have only done about 1500 miles by mext April.

Bunch of robbing b******, the only thing I can fault with the GS is the fact it is a f**** BMW and they seem to think it is their right to screw the living s*** out of anyone who owns one.

No other manufacturer on the planet run scams like this, but I bet if I do not pay up for this and the FD fails they will blame it on lack of service and wriggle out of warrant claim.

I will keep it for next summer, but there is no way I am gonna fork out for two services, plus £350 for warranty every 6000 miles.

I would consider paying for one service plus warranty fee every year for peace of mind and reliable motoring, but not paying them a couple of hundred quid every spring to change almost new oil.

I just had my 12,000 mile service today and the service book clearly says the next service is due at 18,000 miles or a year from now. The annual service is for those who do not cover 6,000 miles in a year.

I hope you enjoy the bike, and please do not get sucked in to extra servicing for the sake of it.

Have you ever considered taking it back to Cotswold BMW, handing them over the keys/V5C and telling them that you're too fooking stupid to own it?

Feck me Rasher, stop making a drama. Somewhere here, there is a missunderstanding so calm down. I suspect that the previous owner hadn't done 6k in the first year so on their records it will probably need an annual before the mileage is reached.

You don't need a service until 12k and it will not affect your warranty. Service is done on mileage i.e every 6000 unless you don't do it within 12 months.

Have you tried calling the service department instead of sales?

You dozy ****, can you not read?

That is 'annual', as in it will be due a service 12 months after the last service regular 6,000 miler which you had done just a day or so ago..... OR when your bike has managed to clock up an additional 6,000 miles on top of the six thousand or so it has done already.... whichever is the earlier.

As you plan to do one thousand five hundred miles between now and next April, you will have five months to clock up the remaining 4,500 miles.

After that? It will every 12 months or every six thousand miles whichever is the sooner....

......but you will have sold the bike by then if your average ownership record is anything to go by.

There are some idiots about.

When I bought my bike (2 years & 9 months old, 11,150 miles) it had had 4 services according to the service history.
Total cost: over £1,200.

There's one born every minute.

Now for any fool who thinks about the trade in value with a full service history,
Would you be prepared to give an extra £1200 for my bike over one on which the man says: "I service it myself every 6000 miles"

I wouldn't!

On the subject of lunatic service and warrranty issues:
About 4 years ago, at the time Rover went bellyup, a friend bought a Rover off Charles Hurst. The car had, at this stage, been lying in storage for 5.5 months. An independent warraty was provided by Hursts, and the took the car home. A week & 150 miles later he got a letter from Charles Hursts, telling him that unless the car was serviced by them in the next week, the warranty would be invalid, because the car was now 6 months old.
He, after much screaming and bawling, left it in, and was charged over £200 for changing the oil. They then tolf him they had pht some wonderful additive shite in with the oil to prolong the life of the engine, and it was another £15.00. He told them to take it out again, because he did not want it!

It has had 3 services in the first 6k / 28 months and they are telling me it will need a 4th within 8k and 34 months.

I am not so stupid as to pay rip off merchants for no good reason, I know a lot of BMW owners are brainwashed 4th Reich members but I don't want to become some moron who takes it up the arse twice a year from the local dealer.

Great bike, a terrific example, but BMW (and their dealers) seem to be a bunch of robbing Bastards.

My Jap bikes had shorter service intervals in miles, but was always x miles or 12 months and whichever came first and not X miles and 12 months or any other month that may happen to be an anniversary of any previous service or the wedding anniversary of the dealership owner etc.

My understanding was as it had had the 6k service it would be another 6k or twelve months, but two dealers tell me it needs a service in April - According to their computer, which is obviously programmed to spank the living crap out of every owners wallet.

They are wrong. Your bike needs to be serviced every 6,000 miles or if 6,000 miles isn't covered 12 months after the previous service. It looks like there is something iffy with BMW's records. Try calling another dealer two I would recommend are Chester Motorrad 0151 373 4802 or Rainbow 01709 835917. For what it's worth service costs are usually around £200 every 6,000 miles there are a couple of minor jobs that form part of the annual but these will be covered at the nearest 6,000 mile service at minimal cost. I talk from experience having owned 2 1200's covering 48,000 on the first and 24,000 so far on the second. The full service and running costs for my first 1200 can be found here.

I think there has been a mistake in the service book it should be 12 months (not till aprill next year) its called human error.

Rasher, you need a chill pill mate and stop trying to find major issues when there isn't one. You are heading for a fecking coronary

FFS, take the bike to St Eptoe or Adventure Bike warehouse (if they will deal with you) as you clearly don't trust your dealers and yes, your warranty will still be valid

Ride your fecking bike, stop finding issues which don't exist and don't worry!!
