On the annual New Year trip to my brother's I had the annual New Year bike breakdown fiasco. Why does it always happen within a ten mile radius of Norwich on a public holiday?

6th gear has always been a bit "slippy" when rev'ed on my fourth-hand '99 GS (35,000 miles). I lost all acceleration going up the A11 and had to pull into a petrol station. Left the bike there for hogmany and forgot about it to enjoy some good cheer. In the morning had a look at it - I know nothing about bike mechanics but the clutch fluid reservoir seemed a bit low, opened it up and it was empty. Topped it up, but it hasn't helped in the slightest. If I rev the engine in first the bike pulls forward a wee bit but not what you could call "making progress". The bike was stinking like a burnt out 1970s TV.

Clutch failures seem quite common from posts I've read here. Bit peeved to say the least. Anything I can look at myself before I get in touch with Steptoe?

Steptoe is your man
looks like the clutch slave cylinder has leaked fluid all over your clutch

In eight years and three 1150s I've never had a problem, if it is the clutch cylinder which caused the failure perhaps we could all learn to change it at the very first sign of low fluid, leaks or slippage as it's not the sort of thing to just go away:thumb2

Don't overfill the clutch reservoir. That will also cause it to slip.

repeat after me....I AM A TW*T who needs to get more regular servicing done.

if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck,,sooner or later it'll be a worn out duck :mmmm

Yes I'm a twat, I thought I could own a bike, get it serviced once a year and just ignore "mechanics" but I was wrong. It's a learning process...

Steptoe - I'll get the bike recovered to my house and give you a bell in a couple of weeks if that suits.
