After looking fleetingly through Andy's recent excellent report and pics from the Himalayas i have been prompted to add my 5 peneth. I wont try to match Andy's descriptive report in any way shape or form but will offer some pics for you to savour. Pity we did'nt meet up with you lads but you obviously had an excellent time as we did. We were 7 strong only and certainly not magnificent, but we made our own rules and route up as we went along.

Delhi, full of stench, death and deprivation!

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0017.jpg

On his last legs when i saw him or rather off them! Looked like he had some of Proffs cider.

Food on the train journey north to Shimla was free and i ate it!

My steed for 3 weeks, a 535 lightning with hard core kick start!

The mechanic pictured next to Jaber before he let us feck off on our own with his company's bikes. Jaber gave him a free Frank Thomas jacket courtesy of Whatton at the end of the trip when he came to collect and inspect the damage to his bikes in Kalka. It ******* buried him!

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0076.jpg

We soon wished we had taken him with us.

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0092.jpg

Jaber came through though, on time every time as the top Enfield officianado fixing all the groups problems.

Roads were non existent in some places and tight in others with some very near misses for several of us.

We filmed all our own stunts at some hectic speeds while avoiding everything you can think of and more on the roads. The continual blasting of horns is mandatory and whilst it's no guarantee it's the only hope you have.

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0106.jpg

Andy Green had the camera but not the map, however, even though he had'nt got a clue where he was going he always did it flat out.

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0178.jpg

As i said, we filmed our own stunts. Eamon threw his down the road after hitting rocks and losing the steering, it did bend the crank but they straightened it with a lump hammer!

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0247.jpg

Then we threw all 7 over a ravine, here's mine on it's way to the promised land.

We gatecrashed a wedding and tested some tasty morsels.

Then Jaber got sick, but this was due to altitude sickness on more than one occasion.

We met the rider of this HPN prep'd 100PD in Manali who had ridden from Germany. His TT panniers looked wrecked so i gave him Verns details.

Before we knew it we were back in Shimla where we started and on the last day with the bikes we rode down to Kalka to hand them back. In total some 15 hrs of video footage was shot and all being well there will be a DVD out in time for xmas.

Fantastic once in a life time trip and as for Royal Enfields, i want one! Hope you enjoyed living a tiny piece of it Jaber and Phil.

Thanks for that. Inspiring stuff. Great pictures DVD should be great.

Excellent. :clap

How did you cross the ravine once the bikes were over?

Enjoyed that Phil:thumb2, and I'd like to echo Mikes' comment, any pics of you suspended over the ravine:nenau

Thanks for posting the pics and write up Phil, good to see where the jacket went :clap

Excellent. :clap

How did you cross the ravine once the bikes were over?

We had to walk around the landslide, prior to us walking they dynamited it so the path that was there had totally disappeared it wasnt even scary at all:eek:

Great pics Phil, but whos the fat bloke on the Enfield:augie

Classy district of Delhi, Karol Bagh where we stayed on the first night and the last day before flying home. Three bombs went off here 24hrs after we left, i don't think anyone noticed.
2008_0913HimalayasPictures0088.jpg

Parked across from a bar in Narkanda where Andy and Bob stayed. We seemed to park outside a lot of bars on the way round.

The dreaded toy train up to Shimla ended up grossly overloaded by the time we were 3/4 of the way up the line and the wheels were slipping on the track. Arrived 2 1/2 hrs later than we should have done in Shimla but just thankful to be there after seeing flames belching continually out of the exhaust stack as it struggled it's knackers off uphill.

Inner line permit check point for the journey up towards Nako, the closest point to the Tibetan border.

After the road blockage at Nako which we negotiated on foot we dropped down to the river valley and eventually ended up at Sumdo where we needed to show the permits again. I wandered off here to go for a pee and was mid way through splashing the walls when an nasty looking bastard told me ' This is not the bathroom sir', i was actually pissing in the police post wash room where they just use a bucket and soap on the floor. He was not a happy bunny and there's obviously no photos cause i just got on the bike and made my exit.

We ended up here in Kaza and stayed for 2 days, i dont know why cause it was desperate but it was the last real place before a monumental ride to Manali.

2008_0913HimalayasPictures0552.jpg

Putting on extra layers and waterproofs before our climb up over Kunzum La, one of our high passes. Jaber was that ill i still dont know how he made it but he did and his advice would be, go do a trip like this before it's too late!

Brilliant Phil - such a shame we never got to meet up with you guys. I was a tad envious reading your report as it seems t be much better to do it yourself rather than go on a package deal (although that did have its advantages such as no luggage to pack on and punctures fixed at the crack of a whip:P

I can feel for Jaber as when we got to the top of teh Barachla Pass at 16,500 as was goosed and just wanted to have a kip.

Thanks again
