Once again the 660 proves to be utter wank.

Spent hours planning and plotting the route in Mapsource. Send to the 660 which has latest firmware and what do I get?
A load of fakin straight lines all over the south of France and Northern Spain

What a load of utter shite Garmin is.

Now, Anyone know how to fix the cnut? I leave on Friday and havn't used custom routes since it did exactly this last year. God I wish I had bought a tom tom with crap service but usable product.

User error. I bet you've got different versions of City Navigator on Mapsource and the Zumo, haven't you...? :blast

Possibly, but when I bought the **** it came with a disc, I installed it and it managed to produce and send a route to the zumo. Since I have had the unit replaced under warranty I get nothing but basatrd lines all over the place.

Why should they both need to be exactly the same and can I get the mapsource to match the zumo again? I don't want to buy a new map as I hate the zumo and the one in it is April 2010 and the last itme I looked the mountain roads of France and Spain aint changed much since then. Can I get a mapsource update or downdate (is that a word?) to match the zumo?

This is user error. You've uploaded the waypoints but not the route. I did the same recently and a mate pointed out my mistake.

'fraid it's not Garmin's fault:comfort

There's the answer then. I suspect that your warranty replacement has a more up-to-date version of City Navigator than is installed in your copy of Mapsource. However, the Zumo should tell you this when you send the route to it and offer to recalculate the route - no?

If you want to have the same maps on the Zumo and in Mapsource, there's a couple of things you can do -

i) you could erase the maps in the Zumo memory and then build a mapset in Mapsource, using the version of City Navigator which you have and then send that to the Zumo but that will leave you with out-of-date maps in the GPS unit.

ii) buy a NuMaps Lifetime Update - Handtec were recently doing them for the bargain price of £47.00

You could also speak to Garmin support and have a go at persuading them to send you a Mapsource DVD which matches the version of City Navigator in your Zumo, since it was a warranty replacement.

Cheers matey, sounds like your on the ball there my man.

It did ask "recalculate" I said no as I did not want it fakin up all the work I had done in mapsource. Once the straight line horror manifested itself I deleted the routes from the zumo and resent them from the computer hoping it would ask "recalculate" again. Does it? does it fak!
Good point about asking them for the disk to suit but my original 660 was April 2010 and this new one has the same map so im bolloxed if I know what to do.

Thanks for your help

He's right, did exactly the same, but it taught me to delete the old versions of Maps as I update them, it is too easy to be on the wrong map set compared with the nav unit which does become a pain in the a**e if you don't realize you've have done it.

It would make sense that when the mapset and mapsource update they automatically delete old files that are no longer required, as 4 updates in a year equals 22 GB on you PC which is a fair old chunk of hard drive space.

Having said that I now only program in the locations of hotels that I want and use a map to navigate between them its far more fun.

it doesn't have to be this hard

do this - do that - spin around - stick yer finger up yer arse.

get a tom tom :thumb

Well, if thats all it was then fine. I have today paid for lifetime updates, updated the unit,, still don't fakin work. Turns out | have to update it on the PC as well FFS

Why isn't it all automatic? so far its been 2.5 hours in total including the download to the 660 and still downloading the faker to the computer.

This better bloody work:beer:

Thanks for all the help, Al

No, does it fukcers like work. Got the most up to date on both the unit and the computer after 3.5 hours of downloads, send routes, they "send" ok, then they are not there on the Zumo. It's not me, im a fully computer savvy dude. so my original heading stands

The 660 sucks in my opinion.

Sounds like you're in a bit of a mess. OK, a few things to check on:

1. On the 660 go to Map Info and check the version number.
2. Open MapSource and from the top left drop down list check that you have planned your routes in the SAME map version.
3. The indexing for maps change, this is physics not Garmins fault. To see an example of what I mean create a short route (say 50 miles or so) and from the View menu choose to view in Google Earth if you have it installed. If you have then you'll notice that your route doesn't exactly follow the roads you planned.......sometimes it's off by several metres and throws you into a lake. This is because the indexing of Google maps and Garmins are different.
4. On the Zumo, under the Navigation menu check to see that Auto Recalculation is OFF. If not, when the 660 receives the routes from MapSource there is a good chance they will be recalculated. Of course, with recalc switched off it's up to you to get back on route should you wonder off it for any reason. Switching auto recalc OFF is the only guaranteed way of the route(s) you upload to the 660 not being recalculated which is after all what you want and the whole point of route planning.
5. When you download any updates there is an 'Options' button prior to the download actually beginning. Ensure you tick this button and check the option to download to both PC and unit.
6. If you planned a route say in map version x and plan to travel the same route in say a few years time then don't delete this old map version from you computer. If you do, or have, then what you need to do is open the route from the old map version into your latest version. It may appear the same but it isn't due to the indexing that mentioned earlier and will change once uploaded to the unit. What you need to do in this case is click on each via point (those little black dots on the route) move them to another nearby location and then move them back again. This will re-index the via points to the new map version and you can then re-save it. This does not apply to Waypoints - they are not indexed the same way and are good from one map version to another.
7. If you attempt to send one saved route after another to the 660 you will end up with only one route. This is because the last sent overwrites the other. If you have multiple routes then this is what you need to do:
(a) have 2 instances of MapSource open at the same time and place them on the desktop so as to be able to view both. In the first version of MapSource right click on your route and choose copy. In the second instance of MapSource in the left hand panel choose paste. You can now close the first route in the first instance of MapSource and open your second route. Repeat this copying and pasting procedure until your second instance of MapSource has all your routes in the left hand panel........let's say 3 for arguments sake. Now when you upload to the 660 the unit will see this as one file and all the routes will be sent. However, when you look in Custom Routes on the 660 you will see them listed as individual routes. Simply choose the one you want to follow and choose Navigate.

Note - when you first turn on the 660 after sending the routes you will probably get a message along the lines of 'new routes found, do you want to import them?' Do not choose the option yes otherwise you'll end up with each route being duplicated and each route will have the suffix -1 added to it. They are already available to you in Custom Routes so just to repeat do NOT choose the option of importing them.

Hope this has been of some help to you?

Thanks very much for all that effort, it was some help. I managed to import half a route! Its just silly now. Im totally pissed off with the bloody thing. Both maps are the same, I have 2 routes planned next to each other, cut and pasted into a new one, made sure they are both the new version. sends one of the 2 to the zumo and still asks if i want to recalculate.

Thanks anyway i will just have to keep fucking about with it but the hammer is lookin good at present.

Al.

If the route was created in an earlier version of Mapsource and even though it is now being displayed on (and forwarded from) a PC with the latest version to a 660 with the latest version, too.... The 660 will need to recalculate it.

You can always check how accurate or inaccurate the recalculation job has been, by sending the route back to the PC, then comparing it with the original.

The simplest work-around is to trace over the route on the PC, save it and then send it to the 660. All should then be well. Tedious, I know.

Yes, thanks even that doesnt work. Just spent 2 hours reloading the whole thing. Won't even accept a route made on the mapsource i have downloaded for the second time.
And now when I turn the 660 on it says "cant unlock maps" but then works as before anway and my garmin says maps are unlocked which of course they are! My goodness these things are shocking.

Will get it sorted when I get back by Garmin and then flog it to buy a vastly better tom tom. Never again a Garmin for me

Did you de-register your old 660 on myGarmin and register the new one? If not, then it's possible that the new maps have been unlocked to the unit ID of your old unit which you returned to Garmin. Best to phone Garmin support to sort this one out, I think.

OK then, try a hard reset by pressing down and holding the on button for at least 8 seconds. This will put the unit back to how it came from the factory. Maps etc will remain in situ but other personal entries such as favourites and home location etc will need to be reentered.

Following any firmware/maps updates it is always advisable to do a soft reset which is achieved by pressing and holding the bottom right hand corner of the screen whilst pressing the on switch as normal to turn on i.e. not for the minimum of 8 seconds this time. A warning will come up asking if you are sure which of course you should press the yes.
