So, 2023 model Mac Mini running Ventura 13.5.

I've been using the sound via a games monitor with no speakers but connecting this to my Hifi using its headphone jack - HDMI connection which was fine.

All fine until the other day it suddenly stopped! Now the connection is there but when I selct it there's no sound and the volume bar, is greyed out.

I'be checked Mac user forums and seen similar issues but with no sounds working or the HDMI nit working form the get go so not really the answer for me.

Any clues guys?

HDMI can be a finicky beast, good quality cables are a good starting point.

Sometimes on my MacBook I need to go into preferences and tell it I want to use HDMI or the headphones for sound output. No rhyme or reason and most of the time it works fine.

Hmm, well that's my Preferences menu in the picture but what you say about the HDMI cable gives me pause for thought as I think I might have changed it about then ...

1 check the Mac isn’t muted.

2 if the volume is grayed out, it means the Mac successfully sees the external audio as connected (when using a lotnof external audio devices the volume is disabled on the Mac). I would start troubleshooting on the monitor’s side.

John’s suggestion about checking hdmi cable is the fist thing I’d check as well.

What exactly is this headphone jack to hdmi connector you say you are using?
