Another one Bites the dust

Commissioner Martin Callinan said GoSafe, which operates the mobile cameras, was helping gardai reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads.
Wonder why he thinks that - doesn't work that way in the UK, don't see why they would reduce deaths and injuries in Ireland any better.

So far in and around Dublin I have come across about 6 or so vans. They are so visible that anyone who doesn't see them in time can't possibly be paying attention and deserves everything they get.
They are a very visible deterrent, unfortunately a lot of drivers over react to them because they are not even aware what the speed limit is on a road and what speed they are driving at.
They are rear facing only, so can't get bikes......:augie

Nice one.
They're appearing more frequently in Donegal

Way too Frequently David.
It wont be long before there is one Burnt here too.
I genuinely would hate to see the Operator Harmed ,
but cant appreciate 100% the anger and frustration they are
generating..

From the UKs Experiance , we have learned they are a wee Magic
money maker , and the "gardai , rsa ,& others that benefit"
are playing with {some} peoples Consciences , claiming these are to enhance safety.. ! ..

They are Fairly Visable , but the unmarked plain van is Not.
I really hope there is a revue before an operator is killed.

The vans I've seen in Donegal have all been unmarked...

REAR VIEW

The pic taken of my vehicle was of the REAR reg. plate, so motorcyclists are at equal risk?

Were you "making progress" away from the back of the van, having passed it, that enabled him to record both your speed and your number plate?

the un marked ones are the Garda vans. usually look like heaps of junk

speed vans released this year are all marke dup and very visable.

dont see why people bother burning them. so stupid, see the limit and just stick to it.

and they are all marked on a google map so not like dont know where they even are.

my attitude is get caught then own fault as daft enough not 1 - see them, 2 - check if they are on your route 3 - going so fast as to get caught. most have nice tollerance so few km over limit wont cause problem

chatting few who maintain them. said less they catch the more money they make as less paper work. everytime you get caught they have process you and the government make the money. the camera crowd are on set price and dont make extra when catch someone

now the garda ones are another story. passed one while back, he had pulled in, had trailer on the back with load building tools in it, but when passed could see it was speed van,

being sneaky about it like the gards do even with the radar gun is just plain lazy and easy pickings

i believe some are also fitted with side cameras to recod bikes

Kamikaze

No, I had slowed down but not sufficiently - 77 kph in a 60 kph zone.

up here the vans can "get" bikes by photographing them and then the lousy bast... sorry, the operator, notes down the bike's plate. I assume it's the same in the south.
