A 27 yr old motorbike racer has died during practice at the Kells Road Races. Earlier in the month Myles Byrne was killed racing at Skerries 100.

I was just wondering how long it will be before the powers that be start calling for an end to road racing here. Personally I hope they don't succeed but I fear the future may bring it all to an end.

A ban can't happen soon enough.
I love racing but how many more of our young men need to die for our enjoyment?

It's their choice to take part but if it was banned would they stop racing? No!
They'd continue but within the relative safety of a controlled circuit environment.

aye and we could restrict the bikes and make them all ware hi viz maybe even fit stabilisers to the bikes ,,least the man died doing something he liked far better imho than wasting away in some hospital bed

Is that the best you can do as an argument in defence of road racing?

I can picture you now at the Colosseum in Rome urging on the gladiators to kill each other.

But don't you worry rockchunk you won't feel the pain of the crash like the rider, you can stick by the side of the road with a coffee and a fag enjoying the spectacle waiting for the next young kid to die.

You haven't the bottle to do it yourself so don't tell us what was best for some young lad.

And don't pour out that shit about better to die doing something you love, it's total bollocks and not you or your family that's affected.

That kid just missed out on 40 years of life.

he died doing what he wanted to do.its very sad abd to many good men have died that way but a lot of guys get killed on the road and i am sure no one on here would like a call to ban all motorcycles as they are to dangerous,
horse riding is dangerous, mountain climbing is dangerous but there are no calls to ban these sports.
the guys involved in road racing no the dangers they face as do all who ride motorcycles.
will it be banned,i hope not,not for my enjoyment at someone elses expense but for the enjoyment of the guys who do the racing.
there is a huge difference between road and track racing and very few riders do both.
if no one wanted to race on the roads then it would not happen no matter how many people stood on the ditch,
many clubs are in financial trouble and between lack of funds and non bikers calling for a ban to save us from ourselfs road racing could be in trouble
just my opinion each to there own.

Dunno...Wouldn't want anyone getting hurt or killed for my entertainment, yet it is an ever-present risk..

....and I still watch.....

You are near to a quotation:
The late George Macdonald Frazer (author of the Flashman books) was an Isle of Man Resident.
A few years ago he made a famous statement on the subject, in which he described the spectacle as similar to that in the Colosseum, where the gladiators engaged in combat.
He described the principal difference as being that the gladiators did it against their will, but not only was road racing voluntary, but the participants paid vast sums of money to compete, and kill themselves to entertain the crowds.
He said, that, on that basis, he was prepared to watch.

On a personal basis, I have been to the Isle of Man races many times.
I do not go for the races, and indeed I find it boring, never having watched a full race through without falling asleep.

I go for the atmosphere, to meet friends & see the bikes.

When I was a teenager, many of my friends were going road racing, and encouraging me to do so. I had no interest, but also realised that if i tried it I would like it, so never even set leg over one of their bikes..

It took many years, but all of the friends who went road racing are now dead as a result.

Of those who go road racing, the top 25% are going to kill themselves - eventually. Most of the rest are just out for a cheap track day, and good luck to them.

Think about a crash in a road race.
The rider's angle of divergence from his chosen path is probably quite narrow. If he misses the first obstacle, E.G: a lamp-post,, he must hit the next one.

Opinions on whether it should be permitted or not:
I don't have any. I think anyone trying to get a result is mad, but then again, Darwin rules.

Myke

These guys race for THEIR own pleasure, not yours. They know the risks and still do it. Their choice, race or not to race.

road racing

These men should not be allowed to kill themselves . This is the closest thing to certain death that any form of racing will give. Bloodsports are one thing but not when it involves people .

You antis are full of shit.....
More people died today crossing the road, or being stung by a wasp, or in a small plane crash.....
Go there and preach your bollox.....
The road racing boys would feck you right off if you started a 'sandwich-board' campaign against their sport.
Go wrap yourselves in cottonwool and mutter your slack-kack from your lovely conservatory, leave the do-ers to do what they love.

And yes, I have competed in motorsport, in fact both 2 and 4 wheels, on tarred roads and in the forest, so FO.

RIP rider, unlucky.:bow

Timpo.

Fatal end to a great sport

Surprised to see such dated and bias view on the issue of an unfortunate accident.
Having raced for years in my earlier days I assure you we all know the risks and
cant wait to get back on the track after a crash in most cases.

Cant see the comparison to gladiators.....remember when races were on the streets in Europe and some still are where in North America onlt tracks are used hence the added risk.
Bottom line is if one hasnt dont it hard to really judge...my twp p worth.

Muppetry at it's best! :mmmm
A lad got killed at Snetterton a month or so ago sitting still at the start line after he stalled it. I didn't hear you squarking about banning circuit racing then! :blast Road racers don't have people with guns at their heads forcing them to race. They do it because they love it. Some others like me like to watch in amazement cos we don't have the talent, not the lack of balls. If you don't like road racing don't watch. Simple. Don't try to ban things just cos you don't agree with it.

Slightly :topic

About 3-4 years ago we were visiting friends in Balleymoney, NI, i beleive it was here where we saw a Memorial garden for Joey Dunlop.
It was the middle of August and one evening there was some kind of road race, at the time I didn't have a bike and took little interest. Can anyone tell me what this race may have been :nenau

I'm with you all the way,Timpo.

From my own point, I Marshall at the TT and Manx GP. I've also just got back from Marshalling the IOM Southern 100 Races and the Andreas Club Jurby Road Races. I Marshall because i want the Races to run. I want to provide Safety for the Riders.I DON'T want to see a Tragedy but am aware that that might well happen.
Anyone taking part in a Sport or Job that carries a Risk, does so with the acceptance of what might happen. Very often, the "Buzz" provided by the Danger,is the reason for the participation.

God Rest EVERYONE who has paid the Ultimate Price for their Sport or Job.

What a load of shite....more motorcyclists die each year on the roads in normal conditions. Following your argument bikes would be banned completely......is that what you want...
